There are two key aspects for employers and managers: preventing and addressing bullying at work. Prevention encompasses what types of people you hire, how you treat them, policies and practices and the work environment. When faced with a challenging scenario like encountering 23-year-old Eric Herrera walking down the street wielding a sword, officers' training in de-escalation techniques becomes paramount. Despite their attempts to defuse the situation verbally, Herrera's refusal to comply escalated the encounter. In such critical moments, officers must make split-second decisions to ensure the safety of all involved. Utilizing less lethal force, like deploying a taser, became necessary to bring Herrera under control and prevent further escalation. Taking action when verbal de-escalation fails underscores the importance of having a range of tools and techniques at officers' disposal to manage high-stress situations effectively.
