Imagine if practitioners could talk directly with scholars about what questions they wanted #educationresearch to answer and how. That's exactly what the EdResearch and Transcend are making possible with the practitioner advisory board! Projects like this make me feel so hopeful about bridging the research-to-practice gap in education.

Read my article in Research Professional today which draws upon the GuildHE submission to the Spending Review. Emergent and innovative institutions are not being served well by the current funding structures or by regulatory tools which are not designed with them in mind. The UK HE sector is very diverse, and there are considerable benefits to that diversity. We need regulation and funding that supports that, and allows institutions, of all types and sizes, which deliver excellent research and innovation to thrive, wherever they are, whichever disciplines they specialise in.

With an increase in community-centred and participatory research approaches in academic research, many questions are raised about valuing different sources of knowledge, how PE practitioners (PEPs) should support diverse communities involvement in active research as active knowledge makers, and how to facilitate an equitable research environment. On Wednesday 5 June, the Next Steps team Faye Watson and Deanne Naula will be hosting a workshop focusing on how we can support both communities and academic researchers develop a more diverse research landscape through collaborative research. In this session we'll discuss: - What are the challenges /advances with the development of these approaches within the current system? - How do we recalibrate the power dynamics in traditional research to create and maintain equitable practices for community centred research? - How do we make space for research with communities to be included in academia. - What is the role of PEPs in these approaches? How do we pivot? - What support do PEPs have for working with marginalised collaborators that are usually involved in these in depth ways? We will be joined by 3 speakers who will share their experiences in collaborative research both within and outside academia and how they are challenging the normative practices that can create inequities. The session will be facilitated by Lewis Hou of Science Ceilidh. The workshops are targeted primarily at Public Engagement Professionals working at a strategic level. We define this as having some experience of working to create structural changes to support engagement and the ability to test and implement changes for this. Our #LabFam researcher Honorata Bogusz has just published chapter Automation and wellbeing in Political Science and Public Policy 2024 collection, together with Daniela Bellani 📍 It provides an overview of empirical evidence and theoretical perspectives on the relationship between automation and subjective wellbeing. Authors identify different spheres of influence of automation on individual wellbeing, emphasizing several dimensions associated with working and personal life. Additionally, authors discuss the main limitations in the existing literature on the topic and conclude by drawing research implications and new avenues for future. And we use the evidence, along with our own professional judgement to decide what these best bets are. ◼ We focus on the how, as well as the what, asking not just ‘what works’ but how it works. This means identifying the active ingredients, the elements of the approach that are crucial to its success. ◼ We build a rich evidence picture by looking at more than just individual pieces of research in isolation. ◼ We use trusted sources because our time to read evidence is finite. ◼ We explore the nuance, looking beyond the surface, avoiding blanket statements that the evidence doesn’t support. We know some things work well in one context but not another, and that average effects hide nuance. ◼ Implementation is key. We make evidence-informed decisions on what to implement. Once we have codified the active ingredients of an approach, we clearly communicate them, and ensure that approaches are delivered with fidelity.
