Ever caught yourself asking, "How was school today?" and all you got back was a "Fine"? We've all been there, right? That simple word could be hinting at something way more significant—maybe our kiddos aren't as fired up about learning as they could be. And let’s be honest, we want education to be nothing short of transformative! Shout out to my colleagues Aylon Samouha, Jenee Henry Wood, and Jeff Wetzler for packaging all of the findings, ideas, and insights from almost a decade of work with Transcend in a new book, "Extraordinary Learning for All." This gem is chock-full of insights on how to tailor educational spaces to fit every unique learner out there. Learn more and get your copy! https://lnkd.in/eD-BPBTs

🤔 A Thought Experiment & Book Recommendation 📚 1) I’ve been mulling over this for a while: as a design community armed with the superpowers of critical thinking, problem-solving, and building things that actually add value, shouldn’t we spend more time tackling really hard challenges that make the world a better place - even just a bit? 🌍✨ One way I’ve been lucky to experiment this is through Sora Schools, a transformational K12 school that reimagines education for a better future. Together with my dear friend and creative genius, Rit Mishra, we put some thoughts into words. Link goes here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gR9ceAF9 Kudos to Service Design Network 🙏 2) On a related note, if this sort of thinking resonates, let me nudge you toward a must-read: Moral Ambition by Rutger Bregman. It's pure gold! It’s coming out in English coming spring - or, if you’re feeling bold, pick it up now in Finnish (learning a new language is ambitious, right? :) 🇫🇮💪 👉 And then, don’t just read - act: The School for Moral Ambition Garrett Smiley Luis E. Excited to share this research I worked on in collaboration with my excellent colleagues at The University Of Memphis: Exploring the Shift in Growth Mindset During Inquiry-Based Learning. Published in The Journal of Applied Instructional Design, this study conducts a longitudinal analysis within a middle school (Grades 6-8) to understand shifts in growth mindset over a semester as learners engage in inquiry-based learning. https://lnkd.in/gvpPN7MZ

Novel: "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Recall key facts and details from the novel. Explain why Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson. Write a diary entry as Scout describing her feelings about the trial. Analyze the differences in how Scout and Atticus view the townspeople of Maycomb. Assess the impact of the mockingbird symbol in conveying the themes of innocence and injustice. Create a new chapter that takes place 10 years after the events of the novel, focusing on Scout’s reflections as an adult. When I pick up a literacy book, I like to see how teachers structure lessons that progressively develop higher-order thinking skills, from basic recall of facts to creative and critical engagement with the text. I like to see how the teacher communicates the success criteria at the beginning of a lesson or unit and continuously refers to the success criteria throughout the learning process. I like to see teachers use them as a basis for formative assessment, feedback, and classroom discussions I like to see examples and models of successful work that meet the criteria and how students analyse these examples to help them understand what quality work looks like and how to achieve it.
