Imagine this - A team of employees sitting together, discussing whose birthday is to be celebrated this month, which festivities are coming by, which decorations to choose, which rangoli colors to buy, whether there are any decoration items remaining from previous months and most importantly which games need to be played. Could you guess which department am I talking about? It's a no brainer - Human Resources! The HR department is usually seen as a team of employees who: 1. Overdo celebrations, parties, or events such as frequent cake-cutting ceremonies. 2. Constantly collect feedback but never quite do anything about it 3. Micro-manage attendance and leaves - both sick and casual 4. Create mandatory team-building activities that are not aligned with an employee's preferences 5. Spend a lot of time on elaborate office decorations However, I'd like to point out, the HR Team is beyond these activities. Here are the top five things they manage to ensure an employee's sustained growth and happiness in the company: 1. Talent Acquisition: Finding, attracting, and retaining talent in a competitive job market can be challenging. 2. Employee Engagement: Employees actually fret when birthdays and festivities aren't celebrated! 3. Employee Development: Managing various training initiatives - onsite and offsite to ensure one is always learning new skills and adapting. 4. Legal Compliance: Ensuring the legal notices and compliances are kept below the radar on a monthly basis 5. Confidentiality of sensitive news: Maintaining a fine balance between what is shared and what is not required to be shared to maintain the equilibrium. So, the next time you meet your HR team member, be thankful for all the effort they are putting in to ensure you are happy. As we head into the festive season, I’ve decided to mix things up and embrace diversity in our holiday celebrations. It’s a time for everyone to contribute, participate, and enjoy the festivities together. It’s clear that the weight of organizing office parties has disproportionately fallen on the women in our workplace. They’ve selflessly taken on these mundane tasks, from planning to decorating, and everything in between. While their efforts have brought joy to our celebrations, it’s important to recognize this imbalance and strive for a more inclusive approach where responsibilities are shared equally amongst all team members. In years past, the responsibility of organizing our office holiday parties and decorating our workspace often fell on the shoulders of two dedicated ladies from my department. However, I asked each of my department chiefs to nominate two volunteers. The response was quite wonderful to include asking if they can dress up. What we’ve seen is a wonderful mix of new decorating ideas and a diverse group who brainstormed and worked together to create a festive atmosphere that represents all of us. Another reminder of the power of diversity and collaboration. So, here’s to a holiday season filled with shared responsibilities, collective joy, and appreciation for the unique contributions of each team member. Whilst traditional Christmas activities are popular, we, as HR professionals, must be mindful of diversity at this time, ensuring that all employees feel a part of the celebrations. Here's how we can make this season more inclusive: ❄️Open up the planning to employees: Create a diverse planning committee and invite everyone to contribute with their feedback and ideas. ❄️ Use inclusive language: Consider saying ‘Happy Holidays’ instead of ‘Merry Christmas’. It has a broader reach and encompasses all holidays celebrated during the winter season, as well as acknowledging that not everyone celebrates Christmas. ❄️ Host inclusive activities: Planning a Christmas party? Consider making it a winter-themed event or end-of-year celebration, rather than being exclusively Christmas-focused. Be mindful of your food and drink choices and ensure there are alcohol-free options available. ❄️ Keep activities optional: Ensure that everyone knows that they don’t have to attend the festive activities and that there will be no ramifications if they decide not to join. ❄️ Approach gift exchanging with sensitivity: Be considerate of different financial circumstances and cultural norms when organising a gift exchange.
