WHAT IS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT? Community development is a holistic approach, an organized effort to support people in a community to lead a better lifestyle, that is; it enhances peoples living standards in a community. For this to be effective, the people must have faith that working together can make a difference considering the participatory approach. Community development entails principles of sustainable development, empowerment, inclusivity, social justice, human rights, participative democracy and equality. Such programs are out to address challenges and gaps oppressing the community members (Men, women, Girls and Boys). A community feels more alive when people who live there love it enough to help improve it. Helping your community makes life better for your friends, family and other people who live where you live. If you look around and see that your community has a lot of problems, there's no better time to start fixing them than right now. little works like: organizing a clean up campaign with young people in the community is another way to facilitate development. Oftentimes, we abandon where we come from and where we live. Sometimes we neglect little works of volunteerism for our communities. We often think of developing our communities when we are in the middle of shame and disgrace such as preparing for funerals and other gatherings ( when you hear of dead for a family member, that is when arrangements for reconstruction of the house and the road leading to the house will begin. After the event everything goes back to normal as if we do not belong in that community). While working in community development, I have had the opportunity to work with rural, urban and indigenous communities and various social groups in Cameroon and some countries in Africa. One thing I learnt is that each community context and its issues and initiatives are unique due to cultural differences and patriarchy. The success or failures of a community program/project depends on the leadership, that is persons who identify community issues, how community issues are analyzed, who developed principles, frameworks and actions for community change and projects/programs to be implemented. Most young people when they move from rural to semi-urban communities in search of greener pastures, they sometimes forget where they come from and where they are heading to. No time to think on how they can contribute to the development of their new communities or communities of origin. Community development is a consistent and continuous process. The more love you pour in, the better it will get. If we are unable to volunteer for our communities, then we are failing in terms of achieving the dignity of the human person. #Supportyourcommunity# #Communitydevelopment#

Young people are changing the landscape of community service according to a new report by the Center for Expanding Leadership & Opportunity (CELO) and The Allstate Foundation. Results showed that Gen Z is moving beyond traditional volunteerism and is prioritizing inclusivity, awareness, and social justice. With 70% of respondents engaging in service monthly, young people are committed to redefining what it means to serve their communities. The results also emphasize the importance of centering youth voices in creating programs, highlighting the power of youth-led initiatives in creating lasting impacts. Great insights. Dependency is widespread across all communities where extractive industries are located. People needs to be educated to understand that those resources are non-renewable and will soon run out. Developers has the responsibility to empower the impacted communities to adapt to the change and discourage dependency.
Is it worth it? Over 17 years, I've worked in the Community Development Industry, starting with a local NGO, then with various Donor Funded Programs as a Field Officer. My role varied as the circumstances changed with time, but it was still within the Community Development space. Throughout, I have always loved workimg with people, communities, CSOs, CBOs, NGOs, etc and the government. I have always believed and still believe that this is the way forward, "Empowering our People at the Grassroots Level." For the last 8 years, I spent working in the Extractive industry as a Consultant Community Engagement Specialist. Those 8 years exposed me to another side of these projects. Though, these projects bring in much needed investment for the country, they also brought with it immediate change that impacted the peoples psychology, their way of life and relationships. From a very simple, day to day life living off the land to a transformed life. Never had the family discussed or envisioned anything like that. That transformation was immediate and mind boggling. The immediate transformation created a vacuum, where there was no bridging to ensure our people understand what was to happen, the change, impacts, etc and be prepared. Whose responsibility was it, to provide that bridging for the people? The Government? The Developers? As result of this lack of bridging, our people in the project impact areas lose focus on sustainable approaches which. was part of their lives for many generations. They now focus on Money and Material things, sacrificing family ties, relationships, and friendship. However, for the Developer, it is different, the community and not individuals is the target and more concerned about. As a way of building Good relationships with communities, Project Developers respond to requests submitted by project impact Communities through the CSR Policy. They use their money and logistical powress to hold the people in awe of what money can do. Convinced and encouraged by this, the people tend to look to the developer for anything and everything. This trend is something we need to be very concerned about as country for the long run. It is, "DEPENDENCY," unintentionally encouraged by these conglomerates, through the CSR Policy driven by demand from the project impact communities and weak Government.

BACK US TO BACK THEM! Time Together 2024 is your opportunity to support and engage with the national Timebanking UK community, addressing a pressing need for collaborative solutions in social impact and community resilience. It will be our first in-person whole community gathering since pre-pandemic. WHO ARE THE TIMEBANKING COMMUNITY? The Timebanking community comprises individuals and groups who participate in or support the practice of timebanking. Timebanking participants “earn” time, for each hour they spend helping others, which they can then use to receive services from others in the community. This community includes: Participants: Individuals who actively engage in timebanking by offering their skills, services, or time to help others within the community. Time bank Coordinators: Organisers or coordinators, from within their community, who manage and facilitate timebanking activities, ensuring smooth operations and promoting participation. Supporters and Advocates: People who promote the principles of timebanking, advocate for its benefits, and support its integration into community development and social initiatives. Organisations and Initiatives: Not-for-profits, community groups, and organisations that host or support timebanking activities as part of their mission to strengthen community ties and address local needs. Researchers and Educators: Academics, researchers, and educators who study timebanking, its impacts, and its potential for social and economic development. Together, they form a network focused on mutual support, community building, and fostering social capital through the exchange of time and skills rather than traditional currency. The Timebanking community operates on principles of reciprocity, inclusivity, and community empowerment, aiming to create resilient and interconnected communities where everyone's contributions are valued. You can support this community from as little as £200. Please see link in comments for more details.
