Get to know our Board Member, Deborah Johnson. Deborah is one of our longest-serving Board members and a force of nature that's helped to bring about many positive changes in our community! HP: How long have you served on the Board? Deborah: 30+ years. Susan Zellman was the Executive Director and Blair Wilson was the Director of Housing. HP: What do you do for a living? Deborah: I am the NY/NJ Market Manager for JPMorgan Chase Corporate Responsibility Public Engagement leading our public affairs and community engagement work. HP: Is there a woman in your life that's inspired you to push through difficulties and succeed? If so, tell us about her. Deborah: Outside of speaking about my mother, I find that there are so many women making a powerful impact over the last 50 years. I will lift up Dorothy Richardson, a pioneering figure in community development, who inspired others through her dedication to social reform and her innovative approaches to addressing urban challenges. Richardson worked tirelessly to improve living conditions in marginalized communities. One of her most significant contributions was her involvement in the establishment of public housing initiatives such as the Housing Act of 1937 in which the US provided federal funding for the construction of low-income housing. Her advocacy helped to shape policies and programs aimed at alleviating poverty and to creating a more equitable opportunity for disadvantaged populations. She also applied an emphasis on community engagement and participatory planning set a precedent for inclusive and collaborative approaches to urban development by involving residents in the decision-making process and prioritizing their needs and concerns. The Housing Partnership of Morris County is a NeighborWorks member affiliate for which was born out of Dorothy Richardson’s work. HP: What do you find most fulfilling about serving on the board? Deborah: Serving on the board gives you the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of the local community. Whether it’s through advocacy, policy making or strategic planning, our decisions can have a significant impact on the organizations ability to create generational wealth for the families coming through our doors. HP: What's one piece of advice you'd like to give the other women in our community? Deborah: One piece of advice is to understand your value. Your unique experiences and insights can contribute to more comprehensive and effective solutions . Don’t hesitate to assert yourself and take on leadership roles, as your contributions are essential to the organization’s success.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a mere quarter of adults in the U.S. engage in volunteer activities. Latinos, comprising over half of the U.S. population growth in the last decade, represent an invaluable resource. Harnessing this demographic's potential for community involvement is key. Community engagement is not only a testament to social responsibility but a catalyst for societal well-being. How might we improve our communities and promote healthy participation that has a positive net impact on those around us? The times we’re living and the youth that many say just “sits around” is representative of a demoralized society. It is an overall failure of the rapidly unraveling social structure that is concerned not with higher meaning, spirituality, and community, but with individualistic, materialistic gain and distracted satiation. Devoid of meaning, where many don’t have a “place” to fit into, because that social puzzle has been broken apart. Community shouldn’t take money to participate in. It shouldn’t have to take place through an app. It shouldn’t be an exclusive club. It should be an integral part of every region, inseparable from the functions of those in it. Sure, communities can form around entertainment, but does entertainment’s purpose to drive our society into a better direction? Does it include our participation in it? Can we say we did anything meaningful Or is it simply another form of mass satiated distractability? Good times don’t always mean times that are good for us. I’m fun at parties, I swear. What are we building together - outside of a profit motive? We are too controlled, everything is watched, and we communicate through indirect intermediary technology with people across the world rather than person to person with the people in the communities in front of us. There’s major pros to all of this interconnectedness, but there are major cons too. It’s nothing new, and we’ve heard it all before. As a kid I can remember riding my bike and getting into trouble with all of the other neighbor kids. That’s not a commonality anymore for children today. Enough with the problem. What’s the solution? As adults with the capability to jump start our communities, we need to be doing better for the generations following us and be intentional about promoting regional inclusivity - putting structures in place that build us up collectively. This requires a change in how we collectively do things. BCorps instead of SCorps. Volunteerism instead of profit-driven action. The answer lies in a community-driven movement that potentially merges globally interconnected technological cohesion with the locality of regional communities. When change is desperately needed, change will happen, but this is more than just the formation of an organization. It requires real participation by those in it. Real action and guidance to motivate that participation. It’s the rebuilding of a culture that has lost its way. Community health should be a concern of every local municipality. I’ll ask it again: How might we improve our communities and promote healthy participation that has a positive net impact on those around us?

The funding comes in the form of Community Investment Grants, and will support the delivery of a variety of unique programs: Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA): the grant will support the annual RiseUp Women+ Pitch Competition and Program designed to strengthen and support black women-led businesses.      Canadian Women's Foundation: the grant will support programs addressing the stigma and silence around gender-based violence in communities and workplaces. Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital: the grant will support youth employment programs and programs aimed at ending disability stigma in communities, schools, and workplaces. Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB): the grant will support young Indigenous entrepreneurs under the age of 35 operating their businesses in Canada. Loblaw will also cover the cost of CCAB membership for all grantees each year. How can nonprofits secure and sustain social trust in the communities they serve? 1️⃣ Cultivate relationships 2️⃣ Develop local talent 3️⃣ Move slowly and deliberately 4️⃣ Be sensitive to local context In SSIR’s Fall 2023 Issue, Seth Kaplan of The Johns Hopkins University highlights two organizations—Life Remodeled and Partners for Education (Partners for Rural Impact)—applying these practices to trust-building in their local initiatives and shares questions all nonprofits should ask about place-based work. https://lnkd.in/g4r5QY8S
