[Watch] About a week ago, TNPA christened two of the last tugboats at the Port of East London. Here are the highlights: 

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) completes R1billion investment towards Marine Fleet Renewal Programme Today’s delivery of two tugs at the Port of East London is an addition to five tugs which were delivered at the Port of Durban last month. This brings TNPA’s tugboats complement to a total of 38 across its eight commercial seaports, with the Port of Durban boasting 14 tugs and two for the Port of East London. Tugs are designed to provide marine services including safe navigation of vessels, pilotage, towage and waterside pollution combat. The ceremony was attended by the maritime industry stakeholders including, provincial and local government, shipping lines, customers, members of the media, Transnet SOC Ltd and TNPA Board of Directors as well as employees. #TNPAChristeningEL

#TNPAChristeningEL | Congratulating the Ports Authority on this significant milestone, the Eastern Cape Acting Premier, Hon. Mlungisi Mvoko said “Today’s milestone aligns with the strategic view that the ports are the biggest instruments in attracting investors. To us this falls within a package of investments by TNPA to improve capacity at the Port of East London. The investment made by TNPA will boost tugboat availability, improve shipping efficiencies and service delivery to customers. These efficiencies that the province will leverage on will increase the economic activities in areas of the automotive sector and agriculture. The acquisition of these two marine fleets will promote the competitiveness at the port”

#TNPAChristeningEL | During his speech, Transnet SOC Ltd Board Chairperson, Andile Sangqu reaffirmed Transnet's commitment to unlocking the industrial development and economic growth of the Eastern Cape with maritime industry stakeholders. He highlighted key expansion plans for South Africa's unique river port, including the deepening and strengthening of the port's automotive berth to address docking challenges. A significant milestone was reached in November 2023 with the start of the concrete works package. Once completed the port will be able to simultaneously berth two larger vessels resulting in increased volume throughput, this is progressive for the port and the province. “Investing in port infrastructure to drive efficiency and reliability is a catalyst for improved economic competitiveness. Today, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is christening two tugboats (tugs) at the Port of East London. Christening ceremonies are an old maritime tradition believed to bestow good luck to the vessel and crew on its voyage. The two tugs delivered by Damen Shipyards Cape Town replace the existing tug fleet that has reached its operational lifespan at the Port of East London. As we close off Women’s Month, Londeka Dlamini, Chief Marine Engineer Officer at the Port of Ngqura, shares how she ensures the readiness and optimal performance of tugboats. Londeka devotes a significant amount of time to the engine room, where she oversees the smooth and safe operation of TNPA vessels' engines and equipment. Her work is crucial for maintaining vessels and upholding safety standards, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance. Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) supported the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) 7th Annual Maritime Women’s Seminar at the Boardwalk Convention Centre in Gqeberha today. The event contributes to the representation of women in the maritime industry, celebrates their leadership, and raises awareness about the critical issues within the Oceans Economy . TNPA Acting CE: Adv Modjadji Phyllis Difeto shared her insights on the event and discussed how it aligns with TNPA’s commitment to advancing women in the maritime industry. Siphokazi Ndudane from the Office of the Premier in the Eastern Cape addressed the global underrepresentation of women in maritime but expressed optimism over the increasing number of women entering the field. She expressed the magnitude of the sector further than sea trade, and how the sector is a hub of opportunity.

From Corporate Office to Marine Operations #TNPAWomen #BreakingBoundaries Meet Itumeleng Noka ‘Itu’, a Marine Shorehand at the Port of Durban. Itu’s journey with TNPA began in July 2022 when she joined as an intern in Corporate Affairs. Her exposure to the maritime industry and operations inspired her to extend her experience beyond the office and learn more about global trade and shipping movements. When an opportunity came within marine operations, Itu grabbed it, and never looked back. She is now a full-time Marine Shorehand responsible for the safe berthing of vessels. Her duties include the splicing of ropes and wires, general maintenance of quay areas and positioning of fenders along the quayside. This young dynamic woman aspires to occupy more technical marine roles in an industry and make her mark in a unique industry with endless opportunities. “It is my mission to take up space to honour and remember the hard work of those who fought for us” Itu shared. [HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TNPA CHRISTENING CEREMONY] The latest addition of five tugboats to the Port of Durban's fleet is set to enable the port to provide timely shipping response to on-demand craft to service vessels, essential to drive economic growth within KZN. The procurement of these tugs also demonstrates Transnet SOC Ltd's commitment to achieving its Recovery Plan objectives. This plan focuses on implementing tactical initiatives to drive volume recovery and improve operational efficiencies.
