Exploring Innovation through the LeidenForce Project 💧 Did you know that a drop of liquid can "levitate" on a very hot surface without evaporating instantly? This fascinating phenomenon, known as the Leidenfrost effect, is at the heart of the LeidenForce project, a groundbreaking European initiative. Led by the University of Liège, this project brings together an exceptional network of European partners : Université libre de Bruxelles, University of Twente, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, ESPCI Paris - PSL, Université de Lille, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU), Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour and Institute of Science and Technology Austria. Together with industrial leaders like Airbus, and the Centre Spatial de Liège , and other research centers, the project aims to harness this unique phenomenon to develop innovative applications in aviation, metallurgy, and aerospace — with a special focus on cooling and cleaning sensitive surfaces. 🔬 What does this mean? The project promises concrete technological advancements that could revolutionize critical industries, ensuring safety, efficiency, and innovation in high-performance environments. 🚀 Funded by European Commission, LeidenForce exemplifies the power of collaboration in driving scientific discovery toward real-world impact. We’re excited to embark on this journey of discovery, innovation, and application. Stay tuned as we push the boundaries of science and technology! #LeidenForce #Innovation #Research #Aviation #Aerospace #Metallurgy #Collaboration #ULiège European Research Executive Agency (REA) | stephane dorbolo | David Quéré | Maria Fernando | Detlef Lohse | Benjamin Sobac | Anne-Laure Biance | Alexis Duchesne | Scott Waitukaitis | Benoit Scheid | Pierre Colinet | Karl Fleury-Frenette | Bart Vervaet | Jean-François Van Humbeeck | Clément Louriou | Habraken Serge | Christophe Grodent | ULiège - RISE | Didier Mattivi | Julie Louis https://lnkd.in/epVvBDMb

Researcher at AMO GmbH, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Senseair and the Bundeswehr University Munich have successfully developed a waveguide-integrated incandescent thermal mid-infrared emitter using graphene as the active material. This innovative approach significantly enhances the efficiency, compactness, and reliability of gas sensor systems, paving the way for widespread application across various industries. In this study, Nour Negm and colleagues have integrated #graphene #emitters directly on top of silicon photonic waveguides, enabling direct coupling into the waveguide mode. This setup successfully detected emissions in the spectral range of 3 to 5 μm, demonstrating the potential of graphene-based emitters to for air quality monitoring. This result marks a significant step forward in developing efficient, compact, and reliable gas sensor systems. The work has been performed within the #h2020 projects #ULISSES and AEOLUS Project, which aim at developing enhanced capabilities for real-time air quality monitoring in diverse applications in urban areas. https://lnkd.in/dex_JrH8

#PhDAER SEMINAR: NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF FLOWS INDUCED BY PLASMA CORONA DISCHARGE 📌 Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 16:00 - Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Aerospaziali, Politecnico di Milano, Sala Consiglio DAER, Second Floor, Campus Bovisa, Via La Masa, 34, Milano (MI) Speaker: David Fabre in Institut de Mécanique des Fluides de Toulouse (IMFT) Streaming: https://lnkd.in/eFNHKsQv Ionic wind propulsion for flying vehicles is a solution with many advantages, including simplicity of the design without moving parts, almost silent and environmental friendly. It is a well-established solution for thrust in spatial applications, but applications in atmospheric conditions are less advanced. It this talk, we will focus on situations where the plasma is generated by corona discharge, which occurs when a high voltage is applied between a system of electrodes and the electric field is locally high enough to trigger Townsend’s avalanches ionizing the air in the vicinity of the emitter (smaller electrode). 👉 More info on our website https://lnkd.in/eZnVxf47 #DAER #AerospacePoliMi

Why is ice crystal icing a problem for aircraft engines?🧊✈️ Ice crystal icing occurs when an aircraft engine takes in tiny solid ice crystals from the atmosphere❄️. Once inside the engine, the ice crystals may damage the compressor blades, disrupt the combustion process, and reduce engine efficiency. 🎓During his PhD project at Technische Universität Braunschweig and ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab, in collaboration with GE Aerospace, Pavlos Stratakos experimentally investigates how ice crystals behave within the engine, including how they adhere to surfaces🧊⛆. 🎯By identifying the conditions that lead to ice build-up, the research aims to develop solutions to prevent or reduce the impact of ice crystal icing, ultimately making aircraft engines safer and more efficient. #TRACES_DNJD #MSCA #DNJD EU Science, Research and Innovation #science4all #ScienceCommunication #3MT
