Today I had the opportunity to visit the DFS Area Control Center in Karlsruhe, Germany to learn more about their achievements and projects and to see the operations. I was very impressed by the very good and straight forward discussions.
Karlsruhe ACC is continuously improving the capacity and flexibility year by year, supporting the Network performance. I took the opportunity to give a short update on the air traffic situation in the European aviation Network! For this summer we are expecting 7% more traffic than 2023. In some areas of Europe, even 20% more traffic compared to 2019. What is important for me as we are preparing for the peak season, is to show our partners that we are there to support you: through our close coordination, the Rolling Network Operations Plan, our guidance for operational staff as part of our #AllTogetherNow2024 campaign and more so that together we can mitigate the impact of bottlenecks to the benefit of the entire Network.
I also shared my view on 3 major strategic priorities we need to work on to cope with the expected traffic demand and deliver required capacity and environmental performance:
✈ open digital infrastructure, i.e. the need to implement new air traffic management systems functionalities and features as required by the CP1 IR (e.g. FF-ICE) but also the more demanding evolutions currently discussed under the updates of the European ATM Master Plan (e.g. Trajectory Based Operations (TBO), datalink evolutions, ATCO support tools, etc.)
✈ accelerating full air-ground digital integration to have the advanced & automated support tools needed to manage high performing execution of trajectories
✈ taking a more network orientated approach for seamless airspace organisation to be in a position to optimise current and future operations.
Thank you Dirk Mahns , Steffen Liebig and the entire DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH team for sharing your insights and for the good discussions.
