“We need to overcome this circular economy of inefficiency and unnecessary risk when it comes to project planning around utilities,” says Mell Greenall. B.Sustainability, MBA, GAICD, BYDA CEO. BYDA is acutely aware of the need to move from old-school PDFs and printable maps marking utility location and into digital mapping. In a recent interview with Position magazine & SpatialSource.com.au, Mell spoke about BYDA’s capacity to become the digital twin for Australia’s utility infrastructure network. Highlighting the need to work with government to provide appropriate regulatory reform to enable digital innovation in the sector. Find out more about BYDA’s big plans and mission in Mell’s interview with SpatialSource.com.au. #assetprotection #damageprevention #safedigging #safetyfirst #utilities #BYDA #collaboration #makingadifference #impact

A very interesting concept and more interesting is how to overcome engineering challenges.

Imagine a train that did crazy things like balancing on just one rail, turning corners all by itself, and staying steady when it wasn't even moving! ❓But here's the twist – why didn't people believe in this awesome design? Gyroscope-based-stability-providing vehicles run on one rail or single in-line guide has roots back in 1900s or even earlier.

And here’s the proof in the pudding! Alta Planning working with Heavy.ai. The power of spatial analytics AND artificial intelligence AND collaboration = the acceleration of innovation.
Who benefits from critical infrastructure like bridges? This is a critical question transportation professionals need to tackle this century as investments face challenges like affordability, climate change, and electrification. In collaboration with Replica and HEAVY.AI, we analyzed how modeled socially vulnerable populations use every major bridge in the United States to develop an equity weighted criticality score. This quantitative measure can center conversations about how socially vulnerable populations benefit or bear environmental burdens from critical infrastructure like bridges. Alta Planning + Design #Civic #Analytics team is proud to contribute to this effort by contributing to the analysis conception, approach, narrative, and case studies. Many of the ideas behind this analysis are inspired by an article I co-authored with Karel Martens (he) and Cheryl Croshere titled, "Models and the Questions We Ask" which identifies how models can be oriented to answer new questions needed to advance transportation planning. Thank you to Steven Turell and Mike Flaxman for pushing this forward within Replica and Heavy, and to Hannah Day-Kapell, Cole Peiffer, AICP, Grace Young, Izzy Youngs, Brett Hondorp, Beth Flanagan, Patrick Wilson, Arthur Getman, Kelly Dunn (Glenn), and many others for their contributions and review to this effort. Railtech Day 1 – How fast are we progressing? The journey to Railtech had worked great. A late start from Munich but afterward I did travel partly with almost 300 km/h. This aptly describes where we stand with the high-speed rail network in Europe. A lot of things work well and now it's time to close the gaps. 300km/h should no longer be worth a photo, but the "new normal". Under the professional moderation of Majorie van Leijen the expansion of the hgihspeed network was examined from different perspectives. Emilien Dang presented the impressive project of Rail Baltica as living proof of the consistent expansion of the network. Michał Litwin, MBA provided insights into ultrahigh-speed technology and showed what is already technically feasible today. It was important to me to present the advantages of using digital twin technology. The perfect approach to effectively manage the complexity of the projects and capture the impressive secondary effects for the economy and society. To round off the morning, IDOM Consulting, Engineering, Architecture presented Bentley solutions as part of the Rail Baltica project. I'm curious to see what surprises Day 2 has in store and whether I'll make it home safely on Friday despite the strike at Deutsche Bahn.
