#Museum30 – Why museums? The last prompt of this social campaign is the most important. Why museums? What is special about these places? Museums are a gateway to the past and a catalyst for future generations. They are here to encourage learning new histories, ideas, environments, and cultures. To explore differences. Tell the historical narrative. We are more than just a leisure activity, more than a tourist destination. We welcome differences and stimulate communication. We could go on and on about the positive effects of museums but we want to know why you do museums. What makes you want to visit museums? What do you take away after visiting?

Here’s the latest rankings of the top 20 most visited museums in Europe. With the Louvre and Vatican continuing to take the top 2 places, it’s brilliant to see the ongoing success of the UK museum sector- with 7 out of the top 20, and 3 of the top 6 in London alone. Hugely thriving, internationally renowned, and all the data still says that culture is the top draw to London for international visitors. Also particularly noteworthy is Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum- with the greatest individual yearly increase, a huge 53.1%. While this ranking is based on physical footfall, it would be particularly interesting to see new metrics emerge that also focus on wider engagement and impact, including digital and outreach. The world we live in is a hybrid one.

Award-Winning Museum Exhibition Manager | Expert in Creative Design, Project Execution, and Transformative Visitor Experiences
This insightful piece on the evolving role of museums captures the essence of how these institutions have remained relevant and even grown in prominence. Far from becoming outdated, museums are continually reinventing themselves—from embracing digital technologies to creating more inclusive narratives that address historical debates and social justice issues. The shift from exclusive spaces for the elite to democratic venues that engage broader, more diverse audiences reflects how museums are in tune with contemporary values. They are no longer just houses of art and history, but dynamic platforms that spark dialogue on everything from gender representation to the restitution of cultural heritage. Blockbuster exhibitions and record visitor numbers highlight how in-person museum experiences offer something screens cannot replicate: the authenticity of being in the presence of history and art, of encountering artifacts and masterpieces that hold cultural and emotional weight. These spaces, both physical and intellectual, continue to offer unique, transformative experiences that resonate deeply with the public. It’s clear that as long as museums continue to adapt and innovate, they will not only maintain their relevance but further solidify their role as cultural powerhouses in a rapidly changing world. #MuseumInnovation #CulturalHeritage #CuratorialPractice #VisitorExperience #eminscomment #eminspost #eminmuseum #talktothemuseum

A realistic and rather thorough set of comments/suggestions from the perspective of the vast majority of museums — although small in size, they represent a large contribution to the cultural life of our nation. Often, these are hidden jewels that add to not only rural settings but major cities where their presence shines and preserves unique perspectives. The failure to address these inherent characteristics of small museums, may often result in tragic outcomes: https://lnkd.in/gEv2zW67

Are museums outdated? Are they really losing their attraction and their visitors in times of the digital revolution? We highly recommend the latest issue of the UNESCO Courier "Reimagining Museums". You will see that the opposite is actually the case. 👏 Of course, the digital transformation is changing many processes in museums behind the scenes as well as on the front stage. It’s a transformation of the visitor experience itself and it happens for good reasons. Museums need to fulfill their societal purpose, need to be inclusive and democratic and they need to adress the demands of the society and especially the younger and more tech-savy generation in order to keep up. But despite all these technological changes, one thing remains of great importance: The museum experience itself and the original work of art can only be truly experienced on site. Enjoy reading! 📖 #museospace #museums #museumvisit #reimaginingmuseums #digitaltransformation

On why museums, and the research they do, matters... Museums are custodians our stories, and the collections that dwell within them belong to the community of which they are a part. In recent years, though, funding cuts have put significant pressure on many aspects of what museums do so well, in research, collection curation, and public programmes. We know what we know about our place because of those who explore, interrogate, and research. We are able to create effective public programmes, based on our stories, because we are informed by that research. In this episode of Palaeo Jam from last year, we discuss why museums matter, and why conducting research is fundamental to what they are. https://lnkd.in/gyqnivgM
