According to the latest ranking by the China Tourism Academy, Macau has surpassed Hong Kong to become the top destination for mainland Chinese tourists for the first time. Macau scored 83.49 in Q1 2024, while Hong Kong fell to 7th place with a score of 81.77. This marks a significant reversal from pre-pandemic times, when Hong Kong was the #1 choice and Macau struggled to crack the top 10. In a feature article on Chinese tourists by Doug Dingwall at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) over the weekend, GIFT Alumni, Dr Paresh Pant offered his opinion on typology of the typical Chinese traveller to Fiji and the Pacific Islands. They do not seek to visit Pacific Islands for the gentrified association with high end retail or casinos. Instead, they seek authenticity and purity in which the Pacific Islands have a natural advantage. Fiji has the added advantage of having a relatively advanced tourism infrastructure that caters to the Chinese market and non-stop air access on Fiji Airways from Hong Kong to Nadi. By way of background, the growth of the Chinese outbound travel market has been relatively recent, starting around the 1980s. The Chinese Approved Destination Status (ADS) system, based on bi-lateral tourism agreements saw Australia and New Zealand receive their ADS approval in the late 1990s and key Pacific Island countries granted ADS in the early to mid-2000s. Of the 115,500 Chinese visitors to the Pacific Islands in 2019, Fiji received just over 47,000 Chinese visitors. Since Covid-19, international outbound travel from China relied on the re-instatement of the ADS. As a result, most destinations including Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands have seen a relatively slower rate of growth in 2023 when compared to resurgence from other source markets. In 2023, Fiji receiving just under 26,000 Chinese tourists. Spending by foreign tourists in Russia doubles in four years — Travel Industry Union According to co-head of the inbound tourism committee of the Russian Union of Travel Industry Alexey Vengin, the total amount of tourism spending in Russia for the first three quarters of 2023 amounted to $5.1 billion Spending by foreign tourists in Russia in the first three quarters of 2023 doubled in comparison with the same period in pre-pandemic 2019, amounting to $858 per trip, co-head of the inbound tourism committee of the Russian Union of Travel Industry, Alexey Vengin, said during the union’s strategic session. "If we divide the export of services (total amount of expenses by foreigners visiting Russia when they make inbound tourist trips - TASS) by the number of trips, it turns out that each foreign tourist spent $435 on a trip to Russia in 2019, and according to the results of the first three quarters of 2023, this amount was $858. <…> The reason, probably, is firstly "that our commuter trips have sharply decreased, especially on the western borders. And secondly, prices for tourist services in Russia are growing to one degree or another," he said. Vengin noted that the total amount of tourism spending in Russia for the first three quarters of 2023 amounted to $5.1 billion, while for the same period in 2019 it was $8.6 billion. "The number of trips totaled 19 million in 2019 and almost 6 million in 2023. Here the number of trips is taken based on data from Rosstat (Russia’s statistics service - TASS) in three areas. According to the federal law, these are tourism, business and private visits. As for the number of foreigners - also according to Rosstat - in 2019 there were almost 11 million people in the first three quarters, in the first three quarters of 2023 there were 2.2 million," the expert said. #business #finance #financialservices

A recent survey by Oliver Wyman found that only 14% of high-income households plan to travel abroad in 2024. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why. ✈️ Abundant domestic options. The primary reason for this shift is the plethora of travel options within China. ✈️ More cost efficient. Travelling within mainland China costs less than 1,000 yuan per person, significantly cheaper than trips to places like Hong Kong or Japan. ✈️ Safety concerns.
