There are 3 different buckets when it comes to Big Fashions' carbon emissions and how they're tracked. And there is one thing a lot of brands aren't disclosing... When calculating the carbon emissions of a brand, it's determined by: 1. Direct emissions generated by a company's owned and operated assets 2. Indirect emissions from a company's purchased energy resources (heating, cooling, electricity, etc.) 3. Everything else! By everything else, we mean the indirect emissions from across the supply chain, from consumer use of items to the lifetime of those items and more. What's shocking -- 'everything else' is at least 95% of a brand's total carbon footprint. This bucket is often forgotten when brands are revealing their carbon emission output. Transparency and accountability are essential to achieving a circular revolution in our industry. But transparency has also been a huge challenge, with many brands struggling with supply chain traceability. That’s why we love what ASKET is doing with their new Impact Receipt, which breaks down the carbon emissions, water, and energy used to create their garments. Be sure to check out the transparency module on each of Asket’s product pages, which offers even more detailed information about garments’ Traceability, Impact, and Landed Cost. It’s pretty amazing to see the full breakdown of what an Asket garment costs—from raw material and milling, through manufacturing, transport, and retail. In our litigious society people commonly file lawsuits after an injury obtained while using a product. Much of the time the lawsuit is based on some version of “Well you did not warn me that could have happened therefore you are responsible and you owe me.” And yet the one thing about our so called modern lifestyle that never ceases to amaze me is how many toxic substances we are exposed to everyday without our knowledge and without any warning. Many of the chemicals we are routinely exposed to have never been tested for safe use in humans. And believe it or not, there are actually many toxic substances even in the clothes you wear. And that is the focus of E137 which is called Toxic Textiles: Beware of Your Wardrobe. Always remember to live sustainably because this is how we build a better future. 🚛🌎 Did you know the sportswear giant's supply chain accounts for over 90% of the company's climate footprint? Yes, we're talking about #Nike. However, their Scope 3 emissions share is standard across the fashion industry and most economic sectors. Why? Those emissions are typically the hardest to measure for the simple reason that they occur outside of a company's operations. Both data gathering and actions for emission reductions require collaboration with suppliers, who are crucial in tracking data. The reduction entails measuring the supply chain's footprint, a complex task regardless of the method used, and becomes even more challenging when trying to gather more precise data. You probably already know if you're a company involved in transport, logistics, or supply chain. At Tennders, we're also aware of it, but we're already taking action. Our #FMS allows us to cross-reference enough data from the cargo, the truck, and the route to start measuring and offer an initial report on Scope 3 emissions and empty km. We have a long road ahead, where we've set our sights on enhancing our measurement capability and offering our users roadmaps for mitigation. But that's right, Tennders is already on it. We've set the groundwork to give land-based supply chains a glimpse into their environmental impact. We are determined to be part of the solution. 🌿 Would you like to know more? Did you realize your #wardrobe is secretly harming our #oceans? The clothes we wear are often made from #SyntheticMaterials, constituting a staggering 60% of our wardrobes. These fabrics shed tiny plastic fibers called microplastics when washed, with a single garment releasing millions! 😱 Shockingly, around 35% of #microplastics in our waterways come from our clothes, threatening marine life from plankton to whales. And it gets worse! 30% to 40% of the world's clothing production ends up UNWORN, becoming textile waste straight from production! #FastFashion, or even #UltraFastFashion, is making this problem worse every year! How can we tackle these pressing issues? That's precisely what we discussed in our recent workshop with over 80 students from international schools. The findings were clear: everyone can make #SustainableChoices, from conscious shopping (we explored ECOALF as one great example) to using water filters in washing machines (check-out PlanetCare). Together, we can make a difference! 🌍💚 #EducationForImpact #NextGenLeaders 💪 #SustainableFashion #Microplastics #WaterPollution #FastFashion #EnvironmentalImpact #ShapeTheFuture #TakeAction

Gaelle, very wise thoughts on #overconsumption and the #unsustainability of the Global North! The Changing Markets Foundation's eye-opening study results was also covered by their own George Harding-Rolls earlier this week: https://bit.ly/47ap7qv : "𝟕𝟔% 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬' 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭, 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚, finds our major new investigation into the fashion industry. With 21 discreet trackers sewn into second-hand clothing in perfect condition, we have been tracking items for over a year as they moved around the world." From this investigation it is clear that corporations do match people when it comes to faulty thinking and bad behavior, however in their case these ate coupled with far more POWER so no doubt “People are persuaded to spend money we don't have, on things we don't need, to create impressions that won't last, on people we don't care about.” Apparently, we are also often misled when it comes to #sustainability claims, such as the take-back initiatives of the #fashion industry you have elaborated on. I am also stunned by the #fastfashion exploitation of #people & #planet as itt appears to be unstoppable . Don’t miss the article, if you have not seen it yet '𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 ‘𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐩’ 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞" https://bit.ly/3rGG5g0 #greenwashing #policrisis #development #fashion #fastfashion #takeback #circulareconomy #wastemanagement #circularity
We - Global North, I’m talking to you especially - have to change our relationship with stuff. To quote Tim Jackson from his book Post-Growth: Life After Capitalism - “People are persuaded to spend money we don't have, on things we don't need, to create impressions that won't last, on people we don't care about.” The next part is how much waste we thoughtlessly and needlessly create. Waste that is very often exported rather than properly managed. Waste that even when regulated isn’t properly managed. Our marketing deliberately confuses want with need. Stores are deliberately over stocked. In order to eliminate this waste (and the exploitation of nature and people that creates it) we need to shift our consumer habits. And we need to do this with policy makers and industry. In this case, it’s something consumers can and are leading: with investigations that show the reality; with demands for extended producer responsibility; and with efforts like right-to-repair. Government and industry should move to lessen overproduction; design for real circularity and work with consumers on systems change and build the infrastructure to manage waste instead of exporting it to countries that end up being our dumping grounds….

• I have witnessed firsthand these stringent measures taken by the Chinese Government to address the most polluting sectors of the fashion industry • These strict measures have subsequently forced many small factories to shut down permanently 😔 • The implementation of these waste water management systems, even on a smaller scale, can come with considerable costs • While these closures represent a necessary step toward environmental responsibility, they also highlight the complexities faced by businesses in balancing sustainability with economic viability 🌏 👉Follow us for weekly Fashion Design & Production Tips & Advice! #sustainability #wastewater #industrial #fashionindustry #garmentmanufacturing

It strikes me as a rather bold commercial decision to “greenwash” in a competitive market. Even if a regulator does not call you out, there must be a risk that your competitors or customers will. The potential commercial loss could be profound: not only will customers avoid the greenwashed products, they might also avoid the brands/businesses altogether. How can we explain this behaviour? Unless it is an accident, the obvious answer is that the potential commercial gain from greenwashing – via attracting more customers and/or charging higher prices – is larger. Watch this space...
