Has fashion’s new tights #trend got legs? Tights and stockings are all the rage as young consumers gravitate to preppy fashion and find inspiration in the Miu Miu aesthetic. New labels are capitalising on the trend. According to Allied Market Research, the global hosiery market is growing at an annual rate of 4.5%, and is projected to reach $62.4 billion by 2032. This is largely thanks to more and more consumers seeing #tights and #stockings as a staple of their outfit, rather than just a practical accessory. “Hosiery is not being used solely for layering anymore, now it is being worn more as a garment in its own right,” agrees Francesca Capper, co-founder of Poster Girl, whose recent viral campaign featured influencer Cindy Kimberly wearing bright pink stockings and a cropped jacket across the streets of New York. With the trend showing no signs of slowing, those able to provide affordable, quality and on-trend tights and stockings are set to win big. Thoughts on this new trend? Menswear this, womenswear that. It's probably a bit old school to say the future of the suit belongs to men only when, on fashion runways, we're seeing more and more genderless fashion and non-binary models. Men flaunting handbags, women rocking suits - fashion is always a rule-breaking parade. And that's fine - the more, the merrier. Shoppers are crossing categories, embracing genderless styles, but it is also true that menswear is a booming business, sometimes growing faster than women's. Remember when women borrowed men's suits? Now it's men rocking women's suits - sleek cuts, tailored waists, vibrant hues. It started with Bowie and Lennox. Now, Harry Styles leads the way with gender-neutral fashion, while Lady Gaga rocks a three-piece for an ELLE cover. So, suits are still making powerful statements in the world. Being non-binary doesn't mean confusion or pressure to fit a mould. The suit symbolises timeless elegance and has been redefining gender roles for ages. People who shop for women’s clothes know The Struggle. Sizing. Bet you just groaned/winced/nodded. It is WILD. It should be easy. Dress sizes are built on a system, after all. And whilst very few people are a match for one size’s three main measurements, we all know that the problem is garments just aren’t made to them anymore. Not even within a brand. But there is actually an exception. One garment is still, in my experience, 95% of the time “true to size”. The measurements genuinely work across everyday, sport and swimwear styles. The irony? The vast majority of people who wear said garment are wearing the wrong size. Bras are actually made bang on per their sizing. Which is partly a testament to their complexity, and the fact that garments above a certain price point are still designed by experts. Knowing your size and buying items that fit is well worth the investment in terms of comfort, efficacy, and pleasure. And it’s actually very straightforward to get fitted when you know how.
