Meanwhile, the University of Minnesota Rochester marked significant milestones with a move to a new downtown campus at University Square and the appointment of Dr. Stephen Lehmkuhle as the first chancellor. 🌱 **Advancing Education Initiatives:** GRAUC remained committed to educational advocacy, supporting the growth of local partners like RCTC, UMR, and WSU-R. Notably, GRAUC played a pivotal role in securing legislative funding for the CTECH project, fostering career technical education opportunities for the community. 📈 **Strategic Restructuring:** In 2009-2010, GRAUC embarked on a journey of strategic introspection, refining our mission and organizational structure to better serve as a community advocacy agency. With a leaner board and streamlined committees, we positioned ourselves for greater flexibility and responsiveness in driving impactful initiatives. 🔍 **Advocating for Higher Education:** Our efforts culminated in advocating for the inclusion of public higher education projects in the sales tax reauthorization, aiming to directly benefit Greater Rochester residents. From securing funding for UMR's permanent campus to advancing collaborative projects like CTECH and STEM Village, we navigated legislative channels to realize our vision. 💡 **Looking Ahead:** As we celebrate past achievements, our focus remains steadfast on advocating for the passage of the sales tax referendum in the fall of 2012. The mission statement reflects that Hopkins was founded as the first modern American research university after the German model. At Hopkins, research and teaching are integrated and graduate education and research are emphasized. Undergraduates at Hopkins will be taught by leading researchers and their graduate students and will have a wealth of research opportunities available. 🌟 Reflecting on History: Continuing the Legacy of GRAUC 🌟 As we journey through the annals of GRAUC's impactful history, we unveil yet another chapter of commitment and collaboration, spanning the years 2003-2006. ✨ 2003-2004: Embracing Accountability & Vision Alignment During this period, GRAUC fortified its commitment to accountability, aligning our vision with the esteemed University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) in areas of mutual benefit. We expanded stakeholder discussions, fostering dialogue to explore future growth opportunities. Our efforts aimed to accelerate the expansion of UMR, championing initiatives vital for community and state economic vitality, while advocating for UCR campus co-development. ✨ 2004-2005: Exploring Growth Opportunities & Advocacy Triumphs Delving deeper into growth prospects, GRAUC meticulously examined UMR's expansion opportunities, appointing a specialized task force to scrutinize recommendations. Strengthening our coalition of support, we successfully advocated for crucial funding, securing $3.2 million for the Governor's Rochester Higher Education Development initiative and $12.97 million for UCR Health Sciences renovation. Additionally, we delved into the business plan for a proposed domed stadium, envisioning future possibilities. ✨ 2005-2006: Paving the Way for Transformational Change A testament to our unwavering dedication, GRAUC provided pivotal leadership in the successful passage of the sales tax referendum, allocating an additional $8 million for higher education capital projects. Governor Pawlenty's appointment of the Rochester Higher Education Development Committee (RHEDC) underscored the significance of our collective efforts. With the RHEDC's report on 'Advancing Minnesota', GRAUC's Chair appointed a special Higher Ed Task Force (HEFT), entrusted with spearheading the implementation of RHEDC recommendations. Moreover, our "World of Thanks" event in March celebrated 20 years of GRAUC's exemplary leadership, acknowledging the collective impact achieved through unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit. As we stride forward, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing higher education, fostering innovation, and shaping a brighter future for generations to come. In memory of our father Master Sergeant Jesse Dwayne Johnson, I would like to introduce to you the inaugural year of the MSGT JDJ Memorial Scholarship. Each year this benefit shall increase. The MSGT JDJ Memorial Foundation is a testament to the enduring legacy of a remarkable individual whose impact continues to resonate with his loving family. This scholarship honors his unwavering commitment to education, his compassionate spirit, and his dedication to helping others. Jesse D. Johnson was not only a loving parent but also a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of support to countless individuals. His passion for learning was infectious, inspiring those around him to pursue their goals with zeal and determination. Whether through his words of encouragement, his acts of kindness, or his steadfast belief in the potential of every individual, he touched the lives of many in profound ways. Anything given via this foundation seeks to uphold Jesse's legacy by providing support to promising students who embody his values of resilience, integrity, and generosity of spirit. It aims to recognize and empower those who demonstrate a desire to pursue Architecture or Engineering programs at a 4-year College or University despite facing challenges, and who exhibit a genuine desire to make a positive difference in their communities. Recipients of the MSGT JDJ Memorial Scholarship will receive a $2,000 stipend for unrestricted use toward ANY college Freshman transition expenses. It is our hope that recipients will honor his memory and inspire future generations to embrace the transformative power of education and compassion. To apply for the stipend: ✍ Student must be pursuing an Architecture or Engineering degree at a 4-year College or University, graduating high school in 2024 ✍Student should demonstrate a minimum 3.0GPA ✍Student should submit a personal statement. This short essay often serves as an opportunity for students to showcase their achievements, share their personal story, discuss their career goals, and explain why they are deserving of the assistance. ✍Student should provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher, parent, or mentor who can attest to their character, academic abilities, and potential for success. We are honored to share that the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital obtained 19 U.S. utility patents last year, earning a spot in the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Top 60 Non-profit Research Institutions and Government Agencies Granted U.S. Utility Patents in 2023. We were one of three children's hospitals to receive this distinction, with the others being Cincinnati Children's and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The NAI has launched its newest rankings, the Top 60 Non-Profit Research Institutions and Government Agencies List. As a complement to the Top 100 Worldwide Universities and the Top 100 U.S. Universities lists, this new ranking was created to highlight the role non-profit research institutions and government agencies play in advancing innovation around the world and driving the global economy. “Patenting is not only important within universities but at the non-profit and government level as well. The technologies developed at these institutions and agencies have a tremendous societal and economic impact that should not be overlooked,” said Paul Sanberg, President of the NAI. NAI’s Top 60 Non-profit Research Institutions and Government Agencies List is created using calendar year data provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
