Battery storage, grids needed to deliver UN goal to triple renewable energy, IEA says Summary: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has stated that achieving the ambitious goal set at last year’s COP28 climate summit—to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030—is within reach. However, this will require rapid and extensive expansion of battery storage systems and electric grid infrastructure. The IEA’s latest report outlines the critical need for building 25 million kilometers of transmission lines and installing 1,500 gigawatts (GW) of energy storage by 2030—a 15-fold increase from current capacity. Key Points: Feasibility of the Goal: The IEA highlighted that favorable economic conditions, sufficient manufacturing potential, and supportive policies make the tripling of renewable capacity by 2030 achievable. However, swift action is essential. Necessary Infrastructure: To meet this goal, the report emphasizes the importance of expanding the electric grid by 25 million kilometers and dramatically increasing global energy storage capacity to 1,500 GW.
