A physical object can be a powerful reminder of your values and potential. I’ve started wearing my military ID tags daily. In the past, it was just a uniform item. Now I wear them to remind me of important things. ID tags are important tokens for US Army Soldiers for several reasons. They: 🎫 denote membership in a tight community of buddies who always have your back. 🤝 provide important information to others who can help you during times when you might not be fully able to help yourself. 🇺🇸 are firm reminders of your faith and commitment to your team and your values. What do you turn to as a reminder of your potential, worth, skills, or strengths? United States Army Reserve

Who doesn't like a birthday celebration?? Birthdays are absolutely a thing in the military, too. Each service branch celebrates their birthday. The US Army celebrated 249 years on June 14. Military installations also celebrate birthdays. Ft. Jackson (Columbia, SC), where about half of all Army soldiers are trained, celebrated 107 years on June 2. And no birthday is complete without festivities...and cake. Brands typically say, "thank you for your service" on Veterans Day. And that's great. It's also the absolute minimum that can be done. Look at it like this. If I talk to you once a year, we probably have a passing relationship at best. What if I talk to you on days important to you? Your birthday. Or asking about your spouse. Maybe your pet. If I showed more interest in you personally, wouldn't we have a better relationship? Setting aside common sense, brands still only talk to the military community once a year. #MilitaryMarketing #Military #Marketing #MilitaryAppreciation

History in 60 Seconds: What do you know about Roman Legions? The Roman legion was the backbone of the powerful Roman army for centuries. Here's a breakdown of some key points: 1) Elite Infantry: For most of the Roman Empire's history, legions were the elite heavy infantry of the Roman army. 2) Citizen Soldiers: Early legions were composed entirely of Roman citizens. After reforms by Marius in 107 BC, citizenship wasn't a requirement, but it remained a prestigious role. 3) Size and Organization: The size of legions varied over time, but typically consisted of around 5,200 men during the height of the Empire. They were structured into smaller units called cohorts, centuries, and contubernia. For comparison, a US Army brigade consists of a few battalions and anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers. A colonel is generally in command. Video: Historic Vids

Part of the research I am conducting for my book on the 8th Infantry Regiment of the Illinois National Guard (370th Infantry Regiment) is on the history of the National Guard. This part of the research has been fascinating. From learning about the first three regiments formed during the colonial period to the various Militia and National Defense Acts that helped to shape the Guard into what it is today, it has truly been eye opening. If I may say so myself, it is one of the most interesting chapters in the book.

What a great picture to capture the heart of a courageous warrior. I'm struck by John Chapman's subtle smile and peaceful resolve. This picture reminds me that we in the military can often mistake being tough with being hard. Hardness is easy. It's cold, impersonal, invulnerable and results in disconnectedness. We're tempted to justify hardness when the mission or task is difficult, or when we may or may not necessarily agree with the desired outcome. Put on the blinders, separate the heart from the action, do the task, live for another day. Toughness is connection based (both connected to self and/or a team) and requires selflessness and discipline. Tough, courageous warriors have tenacity, grit, determination, professionalism and most importantly: HUMILITY. I've known plenty of tough people with gentle hearts. Toughness leaves room for the heart to stay connected to your hands and mind. TSgt John Chapman's tenacity, grit and professionalism were on display at the top of Takur Ghar, but his humility, heart and selfless desire to serve brought him to the top of that mountain. I'm not sure you can capture the heart of a tough and selfless warrior any better than this photo of him humbly and gently holding an Afghan baby.
Today we remember the life of US AF Tech Sgt. John Chapman who was killed in action on this day in 2002 while racing to the top of Takur Ghar to call in airstrikes throughout the Shah-i-Kot Valley, where hundreds of US Army soldiers from 10th Mountain Division, United States Army and 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army were pinned down and fighting for their lives. With little to no air support available to them, John was the only one with the planes and authority to drop bombs that day. For his heroic action on the battlefield that day, John would earn the Medal of Honor and go down in history as one of the most decorated members of the STS Community. REST EASY IN VALHALLA BROTHER.
