The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted #Louisiana the power to approve and license its in state #carbon sequestration sites known as Class VI wells. The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for keeping track of US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) final rules. This week brought a package of #Power rules for those that own/operate natural gas and coal generation units. 1. Power Plan rule with will have long term decision impacts to Natural Gas including the need to add carbon capture 2. Effluent Limitations Guidelines (ELG) 3. Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) 4. Mercury and Air Toxic Standard (MATS) According to the EPA, these were released as a package to "provide regulatory certainty". There are many synergies between these rules and would be best for utilities to consider the following: 1. Inventory affected assets and sites, including revisiting legacy sites. 2. Understand how each of these rules impacts the other as well as future investment needs 3. The latest Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks, presenting a national-level overview of annual greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 forward, cites 2022 GHG emissions of 5.489 billion metric tons (Gt) of carbon dioxide equivalent, a 1.3% increase from the prior year. Actual CO2 emissions in 2022 climbed just over 5 Gt, of which 41.9 million metric tons (Mt), or 0.008%, involved U.S. cement plants’ 80.5 Mt of clinker production. EPA finally takes on abandoned coal ash ponds — but it might be too late "EPA released a suite of long-awaited rules meant to cut down the carbon that the U.S. emits when generating electricity. #NEW: Louisiana will now join Wyoming and North Dakota as the third state able to issue permits for wells that store #carbondioxide, a critical component of #carboncapture and storage (#CCS) technology. In all other states, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for permitting. This change will speed up approvals of new projects that are critical for reducing #carbon emissions. Louisiana officials welcomed this decision, saying it will help make the state a major #CCS player and help reduce #industrial emissions. According to tracking from the Clean Air Task Force, developers in Louisiana have proposed roughly 30 #CCS projects, among the most of any state. Officials in Louisiana believe that the state’s robust #petrochemical industry along the Mississippi River, along with geology that’s well suited for #carbonstorage and existing infrastructure make it the perfect place for #CCS development.
