Paper of the week: In their recent work, Xu et. al showed the important role of complement in breast milk in promoting infant health. Complement proteins in breast milk were shown to lyse specific members of gram-positive gut commensal microbiota via a C1-dependent, antibody-independent mechanism. This in turn resulted in assembly of the membrane attack complex and finally leading to bacterial lysis.
