Why internet access must be affordable for everyone 📉 In my new blog, I set out our belief at Careful Trouble (Careful Industries and Promising Trouble) that internet access is an essential utility, and it should be delivered and regulated as such. Current attempts to deliver affordable broadband and internet access are not working. We've seen dire social-tariff takeup and we're expecting yet another round of inflation-busting price rises from most of the major providers. Ofcom is currently consulting on a long overdue plan to ban these inflation-linked mid-contract price rises. This is welcome, but does not go far enough. And we have just seen yet another delay from industry in the implementation of their switching service, One Touch Switch, which will miss its *new* deadline of March 2024. This is what the Federal government should be exercising control over!! Canada needs to first work on a highly regulated economy where the government controls market access and closely monitors business practices: restricts foreign investment in certain industries, closely regulates businesses to ensure compliance with government policies on issues such as labor rights, environmental protection, consumer safety; adhere to government directives, and those found violating regulations will face fines, sanctions, including expulsion from the market. Restricted Market Access: The government will impose stringent regulations or licensing requirements on businesses. Selective Approval of Business Practices: The government may closely monitor and regulate the practices, policies, standards, processes…of businesses operating within Canada. Certain practices that are deemed harmful to citizens or contradict national interests may be prohibited/restricted. This could include measures to ensure fair labor practices, consumer protection, environmental sustainability, ethical business conduct; capping stakeholder shares so that no citizen is forced to live below the poverty limit and/or create serious insecurity across the country frustrating citizens and contributing to civil unrest and/or contribute to unfair price-gouging its citizens. Citizen Frustration Management: The government may enact regulations or policies aimed at preventing citizen frustration caused by perceived exploitation, unfair treatment, or unethical behavior by businesses. This could involve measures to address issues such as price gouging, monopolistic behavior, poor working conditions, or environmental degradation caused by businesses. Government Intervention: In cases where businesses engage in practices that incite citizen frustration, the government may intervene through regulatory enforcement, fines, sanctions, or even nationalization of industries. The goal is to maintain social stability, protect citizen welfare, and uphold public trust in the government's ability to regulate the economy. A new style of governing would play a significant role in shaping the business environment and actively intervenes to ensure that businesses operate in a manner that aligns with national interests and societal well-being, thereby mitigating citizen frustration, maintaining political and economic stability. https://lnkd.in/g7-kdvpP.

The Affordable Connectivity Program is critical for qualified households and is necessary because so much is connected to the Internet now. Many households are left out of easier and more effective ways to gain information, conduct healthcare visits, order online and more. Apps are great but sometimes only as great as the cell service in your region.
