A history of the Blackhorse Regiment in the Vietnam War, and the stories of some of the 20,000 young Americans who served in its ranks during the war.
NEW REVIEW: ''Written by the historian of the ‘Blackhorse’ Cavalry Regiment, who had also served in the Regiment in Vietnam and later. Thus he knows well what he is writing about. The foreword is written by General Frederick M. Franks Jr., who not only served in the Black Horse in Vietnam, but went on to high command in Desert Storm, despite being an amputee.
Training was relentless till they got the movement orders in September 1966, and shipped out to the West Coast. An interesting pointer for the older reader is quoting the pop songs and events of the time. Personal reminiscences also add meat to the historical facts, making the book a very pleasant read. Initially the Black Horse was used in defence of the highways and base camps, but gradually persuaded their commanders and fellow GI’s that the doctrine of ‘Find the Bastards, then pile on’ worked, and they enjoyed success after success.
The story rounds down when two squadrons were shipped home, leaving one to carry on the fight.
As each operation is described, it has the tales of individual soldiers detailing their experiences, and bringing the story to life. Each action is described in great detail, which will be interesting to armchair historians, useful to the scale model-maker, and also for the war gamer.
Altogether a fascinating read, well put together, and full of detail.
Recommended.''
