'Random Coffees' 🤔 What are they? Did you actually go on one - this photo looks somewhat edited 😅 Today, I got to have a Random Coffee with my colleague Mike Davies. We took 30 minutes away from the office to talk. We spoke mostly about running - Mike knows lots and I had a load of questions (Fartlek? 'Kenyan Hills'? Marginal gains? The six World Marathon Majors?) - and our time as Employee Trustees at Stephens Scown having served our terms at different times in our Employee Ownership journey. I forgot to take a photo because the conversation was so good, so Mike was happy to pose in the office instead 📷 Being able to step away from the office environment to get to know our colleagues more personally (and professionally but with less of a service delivery focus) is so beneficial to our ongoing professional relationship. We're all humans, and being to engage with someone on a human level, not just on a service-provision level, helps us to build trust with them and feel more personally fulfilled through the work we do together. I think Random Coffees are a great initiative from my business. Last week, Sircle Media had our annual holiday festivities week, including team breakout sessions, a leadership dinner, a volunteer day with Wellfare, and our official holiday party. We made a conscious choice a couple of years ago to do all of this closer to Thanksgiving, as opposed to Christmas, as it is all centered around gratitude and being thankful for having this amazing community and corporate culture. My reflections: 1- Meeting IRL- while I love our remote and flexible schedule and won't be changing it, it is so important to have some live face time, and just hits different. You need to find a way to have at least some. It will yield amazing results! 2- Leadership Dinner- everyone at Sircle started at the base level (we don't hire senior people externally, and instead groom from within) and so this is the group that excelled and earned their way up the ladder. They should be celebrated! 3- Volunteer Day- this was new this year and will now be a permanent fixture. We are all fortunate to be in the position we are in and we need to pause, reflect, and give back to others who need a hand. Working with Cole Riley and his team is a perfect fit for us! 4- The actual party- just a wonderful time to let loose, share stories, play, dance, laugh, and just enjoy everyone's company without computers open and a work agenda.
