You’ve likely heard of the electronics retailer named “𝘉𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘶𝘺”. Here’s a surprising fact…
It wasn’t always called that.
On June 14, 1981, a tornado tore through the Minneapolis suburbs – churning and flattening for over 25 minutes. The stereo store (at that time, called “The Sound of Music”) took a direct hit.
Its roof was sheared off and the showroom was destroyed. Speakers, turntables and VCRs were strewn all over the parking lot.
But, somehow, the storeroom survived.
Although they were shocked to their core, the employees all kicked in, cleaned up, and salvaged quite a few items to be sold as-is, at huge discounts.
The store owner, Richard Schulze, decided to hold a big sale just six days after the tornado. He set up a trailer in the original store parking lot where the devastation had happened.
He also offered other great deals on open-box items, demo models, discontinued products, and overstock - that could all be marked down.
This store – The Sound of Music – marketed their sale as the place to get the “best buy”.
The sale was a roaring success. (No pun intended!)
Customers wandered, could pick up and touch the items, they liked the no pressure sales, and…the event was so successful, they brought out more merchandise from the stockroom and had a 2nd “Tornado Sale”.

And with that, The Sound of Music made a pivot, changing the way it did business.
🔹 Customers could now touch the items in the showroom, instead of items stored in the stockroom.
🔹 They loved the no-pressure environment, due to no more commissioned sales people.
🔹 And, the company changed its name, to: 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗨𝗬.
Over 40 years have passed since that tornado. Founder Richard Schulze said it was the worst and best thing that ever happened to them.
