Unlocking the true value of sustainable homes … a divisive topic! Sustainability encompasses a wide range of issues, so our goal was to direct the conversation towards the exciting ways we can fund more sustainable homes. 🏡 To kick things off, we asked the audience two questions: do you have a net zero plan, and if so, do you have a funding plan in place to deliver it? Around 90% answered no to both questions. The message from the panel - we can’t wait for the grant fairies to come and help us! 📍Energy services model approach. Integrate energy, finance, technology, and data to unlock opportunities and value, ensuring shared savings between customers. 📍Take ownership and have a long term strategy - don’t believe this is someone else’s problem. 📍Develop projects independent of funding so that when the right funding becomes available, you have a plan ready to go. Options appraisals and collaborating with contractors is key here to change traditional approaches for better outcomes. 📍Customer engagement is key, before during and after - they unlock the success for us all. Just a few of the takeaways from a really engaging session - thank to you all for being a part of it! 🙌 #housing24 #sustainability #sustainsblehomes

It was a privilege to attend the Future Homes Hub Conference today, where the focus was firmly on building the homes and communities of the future. The Future Homes Hub Roadmap provides a clear and ambitious framework for tackling key challenges in the industry, including delivering on the Future Homes Standard, reducing embodied carbon, improving water efficiency and reuse, supporting nature recovery, and creating truly sustainable places. These priorities are essential as we work towards homes that are not only environmentally responsible but also socially impactful. At STARK Group, we’re dedicated to helping regional developers meet these goals through our innovative solutions, from low-carbon materials to sustainable landscaping and water-saving products, all through our trusted efficient network. By embedding ESG principles into every stage of the development process, we can support developers in delivering homes that meet both today’s needs and tomorrow’s expectations. Our Sustainability and Environmental Officer, Peter recently attended the Housing 2024 conference and shared with us his main takeaways from the day - "I’ve been at Progress for just over a year now, and luckily this is my second time attending this conference (Housing23 and now Housing24). "I attended on the second day of the conference with my team, to sit in sessions where retrofitting properties was at the forefront. "I found every speaker exceptional, as not only were they able to convey their experience of retrofitting properties, both negative and positive but they were also able to share their thoughts on what actions would be needed to allow housing associations to meet their net zero goals. "My main takeaway points from each talk I attended included: 🔹 Realising the importance of using our data in strategic ways that can improve the effectiveness of retrofitting and reduce the cost in a world of increasing costs. 🔹 The importance of grant funding in all retrofit schemes, and how to integrate retrofitting works into one workstream. 🔹 Finally out more about how our properties in Scotland fall under different goalposts, and how we can ensure these properties remain compliant on our net zero journey. "On top of the seminars, it was great to network with contractors, even if I was forced to talk to some through card tricks! Plus, it’s always fun to see new and developing technologies on show (for example we saw a sanitizing LED bulb that can work on mould!)" #Housing2024 #ukhousing #Environmental #Sustainability

The only way to make tackling GHG emissions part of how your business works is to have the ability to measure track and report granular data on a regular basis. Aligning carbon reporting with monthly management reporting and providing individual teams with the visibility and ownership of their emissions is vital to embedding carbon reporting within your business #makeyourmark
"We have found the notch software really useful. By inputting the data monthly, it allows us to identify trends more frequently, increase our understanding and allows us to be more responsive." Libby Kerman PIEMA, Sustainability Manager at Lincolnshire Housing Partnership We've had the pleasure of working with the team at Lincolnshire Housing Partnership, a social housing landlord, to measure and record their carbon emissions which has helped them secure £8million funding for energy efficiency measures. The organisation are committed to becoming Net Zero by 2050, and putting their customers first by providing vibrant places, green spaces, and future proof homes. At 30, I turned my passion for sustainability into a profitable venture. 💰 By leveraging tax credits, grants, and preferential loan rates, I found ways to make environmental improvements a net positive for my bottom line. The secret? Seeing this as an opportunity to benefit everyone involved. For instance, more efficient lighting or water fixtures can significantly reduce utility bills and lower the overall cost of living for residents. But it's not just about saving money. It's about promoting sustainability as a fundamental part of the way we now live. Not as a luxury for the wealthy, but as a right for everyone. 🌍 Bringing green spaces and sustainable building practices into affordable projects can have a broader social impact. It shows that it's possible to build green in any community, and that people of all income levels want and deserve healthy, clean, and sustainable living spaces. 🌱 Remember, sustainability isn't just good for the planet, it's good for your wallet too.👍 #BackstageGuide #MakeSustainabilityPay #SustainableProperty

Building a Sustainable Future: Affordable Housing in Developing Countries The quest for affordable housing in developing nations goes beyond just providing shelter—it’s about creating a foundation for sustainable growth, equity, and resilience. In many third-world countries, the demand for housing continues to outpace supply due to rapid urbanization, limited resources, and socioeconomic disparities. Yet, there is immense potential to develop solutions that are not only affordable but also environmentally and socially sustainable. Key Elements of Sustainable Affordable Housing: 1. Innovative Building Materials Using locally sourced, eco-friendly materials like compressed earth blocks, recycled waste, and bamboo reduces costs while minimizing environmental impact. 2. Energy Efficiency Incorporating solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and proper insulation ensures homes are cost-effective for residents in the long run. 3. Community Involvement Engaging local communities in the design and construction process fosters ownership and ensures that housing meets cultural and practical needs. 4. Public-Private Partnerships Collaborations between governments, private developers, and NGOs can mobilize resources and scale up affordable housing projects. Sustainable affordable housing is not just a necessity—it’s an opportunity to uplift millions and reduce inequality. With the right approach, these projects can transform underserved areas into thriving communities. #AffordableHousing #Sustainability #ThirdWorldDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #GreenBuilding
