Happy Friday! Every week we will be sharing testimonials from sport professionals about how they got their start in the sports industry. This weeks testimonial is from Micah Sealock, who recently was hired as a Control Room Seasonal Assistant with the Detroit Redwings! 1. How did you start your career in sports management? “My first job in sports management was a media internship this past summer with the Minot Hot Tots/Honeybees.” 2. What was your biggest challenge early on, and how did you overcome it? “I graduated in December of 2023. I moved back home with my parents and it took me roughly six months to land any sort of job in sports management after applying for numerous entry level positions and internships. The two things that got me through that period of time was faith in myself and my support system. My family and friends were patient with me and believed in me and what I was working towards which in turn helped me to believe in myself even on the worst days. Having a good support system and trusting in your abilities can go a long way.” 3. Which skills helped you land your first job in sports? “I think my wide range of skills in media helped me get this job. I’ve shot and edited videos, wrote scripts and articles, worked in live productions of sports and shows. Before I began working in sports management, I was a wedding videographer. I think it is importance to gain as many skills as possible even if it isn’t the area you plan on working in. Many jobs in sports management involve much more than just the one area that you studied in school. When you get a job try and learn new things if possible. Take advantage of every opportunity you have.” 4. What’s your top advice for someone new to sports management? “ My advice for someone looking to get into sports management would be to embrace change. Don’t be afraid to move somewhere completely foreign to you. It’s good to be uncomfortable and meet new people and experience new things. There are opportunities all over the place you just have to keep looking and go along for the ride. My other advice would be to do as much as possible wherever you are. Do as much as you can because you’re showing your bosses that you’re reliable and willing to go above and beyond to make sure the team is successful.” 5. How has networking impacted your career, and any tips? “ Networking is a big part of any industry. I can’t say that networking has greatly impacted my career as of yet but I’m sure someday it will. Talk to your bosses, be polite in interviews and ask questions, build relationships with your coworkers inside and outside of work. I made many friends while working for the Hot Tots/Honeybees, and I am excited to see where everyone ends up. Sports management is a very competitive industry, but it is important to not forget to make friends along the way. You never know what I could turn into in the future.” Thank you Micah and be on the lookout every Friday for more testimonials!

Want to work in motorsport? Here’s some top tips from Tatum Mandy. Take note.
Motorsport.com Social Media Manager 🏎️ | Open to new opportunities within marketing, communications and events!
Entry level roles don’t exist in motorsport. It may be an ‘entry level’ role on paper. But in reality the competition is 🔥 🔥🔥 Hundreds of applicants means you have to stand out from the crowd with your: 👉previous sports experience 👉personal brand And perhaps even a recommendation from a friend 👀 Want to become a top applicant? Think about how you can put yourself in the best position 👇 1️⃣Previous Experience Have you volunteered at a local track, a fan website or at a sports event? Have you written your own blog? Started your own motorsport TikTok account? Don’t wait for opportunities, create them. Reach out to people who could benefit from your help! 2️⃣Build a Personal Brand Who are you? What do you bring to the table? What reputation follows you? Your personal brand puts a spotlight on you, so that you don’t get a lost amongst a pile of CVs. It doesn’t have to be LinkedIn. But social media platforms help to get your name in front of more people! 3️⃣Grow your Network How often do you visit a new restaurant or buy a new product based on the word of a friend? Recommendations go along way because they are built on trust. And let’s face it, a good recommendation can save the hiring manager so much time! 😅 Think of it as making new friends. Drop someone a message or say hello at an event. You never know when someone could help you on your journey! What else would you add to this list? 👀 #motorsport #motorsportjobs #sportsindustry #networking #personalbrand

When I began my career, I spent 8 years at one of the best sports marketing agencies. Yet, during my studies, all I heard about were the flashy roles at Paris Saint-Germain or Nike. No one ever tells how valuable—and rewarding—it is to start ones career at an agency. In fact, it’s worse than that. Many people outright dismiss agency careers. Of course, it’s more glamorous to imagine yourself working in PSG’s partnerships team or Nike’s sports marketing team, rubbing shoulders with Mbappé. But there’s a persistent negative perception (often from those who’ve never set foot in an agency) that agency work is the worst option to kick off a career. They point to the same 5 clichés over and over. For me, these clichés are actually the top 5 reasons to start a career in a sports marketing agency: 1️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧 👉 I say you’ll grow your network faster than anyone else, interacting with diverse stakeholders and gaining a broad perspective on how the sports business truly operates. 2️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 👉 I say you’ll develop a strong sense of innovation and resilience—skills that will serve you throughout your career. 3️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐞 👉 I say it’s your best opportunity to be in the right place at the right time and climb the career ladder quickly. 4️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞 👉 I say you’ll master customer relationships and account management, skills you’ll use for life. Plus, you’ll gain exposure to countless industries, challenges, and perspectives, rather than being siloed. 5️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬. 👉 I say it’s true—and it’s a huge opportunity to learn the basics of management and develop the ability to work with diverse personalities and mindsets, a skill that will always come in handy. What other benefit would you list ? Share with your network if you agree and help spread the word that a career start at an agency is the idealpath to a succesful career in the sports industry. #jobinsport #sportsjobs #recruitment #sportbusiness #career

Looking for a role in sports? Here’s some information that I found really helpful in my first week as an intern for the Las Vegas Aviators, which I’d like to pass along to others who aspire to work in sports as well! 1.) It’s not all about the logo. Everyone aspires to work for the four major leagues such as the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL. However finding a workplace where you truly fit in and where colleagues feel like family can be far more rewarding and impactful for your personal and professional growth. 2.) Networking is Key. Take every opportunity to connect with anyone you meet, you never know what future opportunities might arise! 3.) Be different. In such a competitive field, take the opportunity to stand out! During my first week, I heard many stories about how others got their first opportunities in the sports world by thinking outside the box and demonstrating their unique qualities. Don’t be afraid to set yourself apart; your individuality can be your greatest asset!
