The Real Dangers Of Overcrowding #events hashtag #planning hashtag #people hashtag The San Francisco Golden Gate bridge was opened to the public in 1937, May was the bridge 87th anniversary. I recall I happened to be visiting San Francisco in 1987 the bridges 50th anniversary, and was among the first of many to cross from the City when it opened around 6am that day. I recall some enthusiastic party revelers had already jumped the barriers earlier that morning, and had made their way across. The 1.6 km walk over the bridge from SF City towards Marin County was initially very orderly, and really quite uneventful, but all became very different on my return. During my walk back around 9am thousands of people had began to swell the bridge from SF City, and were met by thousands of people like myself returning. By late morning the bridge had become totally grid locked, and a very dangerous situation suddenly evolved. By midday the bridge had swelled to approximately 300,000, and according to news reports the following day, the suspension bridge spans had actually flattened & dropped due to the weight of so many people. After the bridge finally cleared in the early afternoon news reports that there were a number of injuries. but no one actually died, thank goodness, which was truly amazing due to the circumstances. I recall at one point a SF Police Motor Cyclist slowly manuvoired his white Harley Davison through the crowd back towards the city with a snake of walkers attached to the back, which I thought was quite clever of some people at the time. Many lessons I'm sure were learned on that day, by SF Emergency Services & Organizers, especially controlling crowding, and emergency planning for these types of events. No one Im sure on the planning committee could have envisioned what actually occurred. Certainly advanced planning for events to prevent over overcrowding is so critical & always the best approach. There are many annual events around the world such as New Year's Eve celebrations, Public demonstrations, sporting events & open air events where controls, and advanced planning to prevent overcrowding must always be kept Top of Mind. Southside of Chicago does not want a luxury wedding venue? I recently met with 8th Ward Alderman Michelle Harris to discuss my plans for The Sidney Estate, a luxury wedding and event venue. Instead of support, I was met with opposition rooted in outdated thinking. Her reasoning? • She compared my vision to a failed nightclub, completely misunderstanding what The Sidney Estate represents. • She claimed her older voters wouldn’t want a wedding venue and dismissed the value this space could bring to the community. • She even said wedding venues aren’t sustainable—despite having no research to back that claim. But here’s the reality: • There’s no luxury wedding venues in her ward. • This project would transform vacant lots into something meaningful. • Even Alderman Harris hosts her events downtown—proving the need for elevated spaces in her own neighborhood. These trips allow our teams to recommend destinations and venues to our clients based on firsthand experiences rather than just information on paper. This knowledge helps everyone involved make smarter business decisions. For example, our Atlanta office sponsored 25 event sourcing professionals for a one of a kind tour of the Beltline. The trip included sightseeing, taste testing, chocolate sampling, graffiti art, and local activities like a wreath-making craft workshop at RFD Social inside Ponce City Market, a 3-million-square-foot community hub.
