If you've been following along, you'll have heard me ramble on about Atelier 17. But did you know the 100th anniversary of its founding is coming up in 2027? Under the leadership of the intrepid Christina Weyl, we've formed The Atelier 17 Project, a non-profit organization that encourages new research about the history of Atelier 17. We seek artists and art historians to partner with us in developing a variety of centennial projects in 2027 and to offer fresh perspectives about Atelier 17 and its members. Some possible methods of contribution include the following. Develop a centennial project: exhibitions, publications, one-off events such as a hands-on workshop or public forums, or other out-of-the-box ideas. New research: Consider sharing your research in an online workshop, which Christina is co-organizing with James Chadwick (University of Amsterdam). Abstracts are due April 30. Christina and James plan for the papers to form the basis of a centennial catalogue. Atelier 17’s Roster: Christina has updated the roster of Atelier 17 artists with 300 names. (Any list is based on Joann Moser’s list compiled in 1977.) We encourage you to reach out if you have any additional details to share. We also seek to fundraise towards a host of projects. There is a donate button over on the website. Stay tuned for news to come. Christina's gorgeous website is here: https://lnkd.in/g_dU66rG

Celtic art Celtic art, associated with the ancient peoples known as Celts, spans a vast timeline from the European Iron Age to the modern era. This art form is renowned for its intricate designs, including spirals, knotwork, and zoomorphic motifs, which often depict animals like stags, boars, and horses12. The earliest Celtic art, from the Hallstatt culture (circa 800-450 BCE), features geometric patterns and stylized figures. This evolved into the more elaborate La Tène style (circa 450 BCE-1st century CE), characterized by flowing, vegetal designs and complex interlacing patterns1. These designs were not only decorative but also held symbolic meanings, often related to nature and spirituality. Celtic art is most famously represented in metalwork, such as the Tara Brooch and the Ardagh Chalice, which showcase the Celts’ exceptional craftsmanship in gold, silver, and bronze2. Additionally, the illuminated manuscripts of the Early Medieval period, like the Book of Kells, highlight the intricate interlace patterns and vibrant colors that define Insular art1. Despite the Roman conquest and subsequent cultural shifts, Celtic art experienced a revival in the 19th century, influencing the Art Nouveau movement and continuing to inspire contemporary artists and designers2. Its enduring appeal lies in its intricate beauty and deep connection to Celtic heritage and mythology. 1: Wikipedia 2: Worldhistory.org. #Celticart#celticheritage#romanhistory#celtichistory#tarabrooch#bookofkells#mythology#romanmythology#celticmythology#thecelts#

A different type of real estate
Chairman, CEO & Co-Founder of Blackstone, New York Times Bestselling Author of What It Takes, Philanthropist
In 2019, I donated £150 million to the University of Oxford to help redefine the study of the humanities for the 21st century. Last week, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities building reached its highest peak and was commemorated with a “topping out" ceremony. Before the final beam was placed, I had the honor of signing the beam, pictured here. This building will unite all humanities faculties under one roof for the first time in Oxford’s 800-year history, and will offer new performing arts and exhibition venues, as well as a new Institute for Ethics in AI.

Since October last year, I've had the pleasure of writing a weekly social media post for work. These posts spotlight different JMA Collection objects and provide me with a great opportunity to further explore our collection. I get to peruse our collection, (which you can too, via our website!), pick an item- whatever it may be- do some research, and write about it. The festival of Tu B'Shvat took place last Thursday and the post I wrote is shared below. Not pictured, is my frustration during the writing process! Did you know that the vast majority of the JMA's audience and visitors are not Jewish? Some Jewish holidays, beliefs and traditions are easy to explain to a non-Jewish audience, but Tu B'Shvat is not. Its origins & meaning lie in the Torah, ancient land practices, Talmudic rabbinical interpretation and Temple history. In writing this post, I learned that sometimes you just have to write around the issue, rather than solve it, and I decided to leave the origins of the festival out. However, I definitely wanted to include the point about "Jewish dynamism", something that is not often talked about, even by Jews. The Jewish culture & people are well-known for our ancient origins and strong commitment to a Jewish future, and most people believe that this is due to our firm grasp on our traditions. While not untrue, I believe that a core factor of our survival is our dynamism- our ability to adapt and respond to changes & challenges. Tu B'Shvat is one example, but the most significant by far would be the implementation of rabbinic Judaism after the fall of the Second Temple in 70 CE. Also cut for brevity was all the information surrounding the Dunera ship, Tatura Internment Camp and the Jewish community in Shepparton. Yes, there used to be significant Jewish community in Shepparton, the majority of whom worked in agriculture. I would recommend spending some time researching these significant moments & events in Victorian Jewish history, including exploring them at the JMA. If you want to read all the posts I've written, follow the JMA on Facebook & Instagram!
🌳 Today is the festival of Tu B’Shvat, the new year of trees! This celebration is named after the date it falls on, the 15th of Shvat & is one of four new years in Judaism. Jews celebrate by getting in touch with nature & eating fruit. Tu B’Shvat is a great example of the dynamism of Jewish belief & tradition, as over the centuries it has been embraced by different groups, from medieval Kabbalists to modern-day environmentalists. This photograph depicts Hermann Zenter, a Dunera boy, picking pears in Shepparton, Victoria, during his forced internment at the Tatura Camp. 📷 Hermann Zentner picking pears, Shepparton, Victoria, 1941. The University of Arizona Museum of Art asked us to help them increase attendance, memberships, and online donations. We mapped a content strategy and design approach for a modern new website that compels viewers to visit, join, and give. On the backend, our developers built a set of powerful tools that make it easy for museum staff to keep the site up-to-date and evergreen. Our strategic user experience design makes the site delightful to explore and keeps visitors engaged longer. Academic research resources are easy to access, and cross-pollination of content converts museum-goers to members. Academic research resources are easy to access, and a strategic cross-pollination of content converts museum-goers to members. Story-telling demonstrates impact and inspires donors to give larger gifts with greater frequency. User interface elements allow viewers to browse events based on interest, art era, availability, and more. Registrations are intuitive and easy. "Public Art in Review; Volume 1" by UAP | Art in public spaces plays a distinguishing role in our country’s history and culture. It reflects and reveals our society, enhances meaning in our civic spaces, and adds uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment. It provides an intersection between past, present, and future; between disciplines and ideas.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of Public Art in Review, Volume 1 (2019-2023.) Public Art in Review is not just a book; it's a unique journey through the world of public art. It's the culmination of years of celebration and exploration of excellence in public art, offering an engaging and accessible overview of this dynamic field. 5 years, 27 curators and over 58 artists and collectives. The book captures the past five years of the Best of Public Art initiative, supported by Artsy. Select members of the curatorium will also provide feature essays and interviews that will further elaborate on unique viewpoints and experiences, reflecting important themes and trends that have emerged through these commissioned artworks.
