This year Mike StJohn-Bond put on some comfortable sneakers and headed down to Mobile World Congress (MWC) – one of the biggest events on the technology calendar. Mirroring the ever-evolving dynamics of the sector, #MWC has become about more than just telecoms and now it encompasses a huge breadth of technological frontiers, as Mike can attest from his experience: “The conference has evolved over the years, but this is simply because the lines between technology sectors are increasingly blurred. This year, this was even clearer with the breakthrough of “coming wave” technologies like GenAI. Companies from different tech sectors need to talk to each other, or they’ll get left behind. MWC needs exhibitors from the AI, semiconductor, data centre sectors, to remain a relevant conference. Edge computing was a prominent area where I saw this convergence take place on the show floor. While coming wave technologies are unlocking new possibilities for mobile and telco, the rise of AI is also challenging them to process more data at greater speeds and volumes. The edge is about processing this data much closer to users – something that’s not possible without semiconductor-based devices like IoT gateways or powerful edge servers. It’s not a physical lab, rather, it’s a concept creating, connecting, building together…at the conference. Coopetition. We had vendor booths connected together, creating a unique experience for both vendors and operators.
