We often have newsrooms ask how to best gauge what their communities need from their news. Our go-to answer: Have you asked them lately? One easy, efficient way newsrooms can do this is a survey. But the not-so-easy part is *acting* on the feedback you hear. We’re so impressed by how newsrooms involved in an Oklahoma Press Association project did this. The newsrooms: 1. asked what the community wanted from the newspaper 2. the newsroom compared those preferences to what they were offering 3. then the newsrooms immediately began to make changes to close the gaps between what the public wanted and what they were publishing. Looking forward to our conversation with newsroom executives from around the country on “Media Bias Barrier: Covering Missing Persons Cases.” at the Radio Television Digital News Association summit, @rtdna.news. Our panel will explore the potential for bias in missing persons cases and discuss how journalists can avoid it as well as insight and strategies every newsroom should know. This could lead to more comprehensive and fair coverage of missing persons cases at a time when people of color represent more than 40% of all missing person cases. #RTDNA #BAMFI #MEDIA Derrica Wilson, Jonathan Franklin, Josh Mankiewicz, #RebkahHoward

Exactly 💯! Before sharing information, it's crucial to think critically, verify with multiple REPUTABLE NEWS SOURCES, and ensure the stories are corroborated. Avoid mistaking OPINIONS for NEWS, as they are distinct. Example, Sean Hannity's show on Fox News is more aligned with opinion and commentary rather than straightforward news reporting. His viewpoints and analysis, are HIS opinions rather than objective news coverage. Bottom line, you want to form your own opinions based on the facts presented. DON'T BE AFRAID TO LEARN THE TRUTH!

My friend Perry Michael Simon writes about the decision by Gannett and McClatchy to drop the AP's services from their news coverage: "It’s strange, though. We’re in an era when there are more ways to disseminate news than at any other point in history, and at the same time, the news business is suffering, and people aren’t nearly as alarmed as they should be. Someone should do a story on that." I agree on both points. 1) It's easier than ever to disseminate information. News organizations rose during a time when that dissemination was hard, and because of it, their business models assume a scarcity of content. Now that the scarcity is gone, those revenue models no longer work. 2) We're not as alarmed as we should be. Journalism plays a critical role in producing social capital, and social capital is vital to a functioning democracy. Fortunately, media outlets do have the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. By connecting people and building community, they could produce even MORE social capital, and open up new streams of revenue. The world doesn't need more content. The world needs more connection. Build community. #apnews #socialcapital #journalism #communitybuilding https://lnkd.in/gQZ4H4dm
