𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗖𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱-𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 PowerCo and QuantumScape have formed a partnership to mass-produce QuantumScape's solid-state lithium-metal battery technology for electric vehicles. PowerCo has been granted a license to produce up to 40 GWh of battery cells annually, with an option to increase capacity to 80 GWh, enough for one million vehicles per year. The collaboration combines QuantumScape's proprietary technology, which uses a solid-state ceramic separator and a pure lithium-metal anode for high energy density, fast charging, and improved safety, with PowerCo's manufacturing expertise. The goal is to scale production for integration into Volkswagen Group vehicles. This non-exclusive agreement supersedes a previous joint venture and is a significant step towards industrializing solid-state battery technology. I do not understand why so many people fail to ask two very simple questions: (1) what is the cost in $ per kWh of such cell? (2) what is the capex per GWh to produce such cell? A simple rule of thumb is that any technology that is more than an order of magnitude more expensive that today’s EV cell technologies will never be adopted in mass manufactured EV. It is clear that the high priced EVs represent less than 5% of the total market, and that only OEMs able to reduce EV battery manufacturing costs and increase production volume will be able to compete profitably in the Affordable EV segment (80% of the market for the rest of the decade is in EV with MSRP less than $40k). A simple illustration: Apple sells 200 million iPhones per year, and pays $1000 per kWh for the batteries. Less than 1/2 days of Tesla EV production represents more GWh of batteries, produced at a cost of about $100 per kWh. Only battery technologies that reduce costs and increase performance will be adopted at large EV-scale.
