Forgetfulness: Some individuals may simply forget that they have a firearm in their luggage, especially if they are accustomed to carrying it for protection or work. Ignorance of Regulations: Some travelers may not be aware of the specific regulations regarding firearms and transportation, especially if they are infrequent flyers or traveling internationally where regulations may differ. Intentional Concealment: In rare cases, individuals may intentionally try to bring firearms through security checkpoints for malicious purposes. 🚫✈️ TSA's Record Firearms Intercept: A Call for Traveler Awareness 🚫✈️ In 2023, TSA officers at Philadelphia International broke records by preventing 45 guns from boarding planes, surpassing the previous high of 44 in 2022. Shockingly, 89% of these firearms were loaded, signaling a concerning trend. Philadelphia reflects a national surge in firearms detected at airport security checkpoints. Across the US, TSA officers stopped 6,737 guns last year, the highest one-year total in TSA history. A staggering 93% of these firearms were loaded, posing unnecessary risks to everyone at the checkpoint. This isn't a record TSA aims to set. "We are seeing far too many firearms at our checkpoints," says Gerardo Spero, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. "What’s particularly concerning is the amount of them that are loaded, presenting an unnecessary risk to everyone." Remember, firearms and ammunition are strictly prohibited in carry-on baggage. They must be unloaded, locked in a hard-sided case, and declared to the airline at the check-in counter for transport in checked baggage. When a firearm is detected at a checkpoint, TSA officers immediately halt operations and involve local law enforcement. Soft & Hard Targets: Soft targets are public locations that do not have any obvious security protections in place. This is in contrast to hard targets, which are well guarded and fortified. Airports fall within the group of hard targets, with the Airport Security overseeing airport checkpoints to ensure the security of the air system. The Airport Security uses sophisticated technologies to prevent and deter threat items like explosives and firearms from entering the secure side of airports. Given that there are limited entry portals into the air system, the Security can focus their attention in a manner that allows them to screen all passengers to detect prohibited items and limit who enters. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) intercepted 1,503 #firearms at #airportsecurity checkpoints during the first quarter of 2024, which ended March 31. This total represents an average of 16.5 firearms per day detected at #TSAcheckpoints, comparable to #firearmdetections during the same time period in 2023, when #TSA officers intercepted 1,508 firearms at airport security checkpoints, an average of 16.8 firearm catches per day.
