For decades, the mining sector has recognised the need to invest in the development of its host communities, both from a regulatory perspective and in recognition of the historical inequities that continue to create socio-economic challenges in communities across South Africa. Community trusts (and similar broad-based community ownership schemes) are one vehicle through which companies seek to benefit communities. . Nigeria is richly endowed with 44 different types of minerals spread across more than 450 locations nationwide. This means that the development of the solid minerals sector has the potential to foster balanced development across all regions of the country. Since each of us comes from a community, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the country’s mineral wealth. Moreover, it is important for us to be informed about the Revised Guidelines for Community Development Agreements (CDAs), especially at this critical time. #DoMiningRight #Mining4InclusiveDevt Check the comments for the link to the full video.

🌍 At Bullions Blaze, we believe in the transformative power of sustainable mining to alleviate poverty and empower local communities in Africa. By providing essential mining tools, training, and economic opportunities, we are driving significant change. Our innovative approach includes leasing mining equipment, conducting training sessions on safe mining practices, and implementing profit-sharing models that benefit both the miners and their families. This will increase productivity and ensure that the economic benefits are shared equitably. These initiatives are life-changing in regions like Western and Northern Kenya, where many live below the poverty line. We're not just extracting resources; we're building futures. By improving sanitation, providing essential tools, and fostering sustainable practices, we’re enhancing the quality of life and creating a foundation for long-term prosperity. Together, we can continue to make a significant impact, transforming the mining industry and eradicating poverty one community at a time. 🌟 #SustainableMining #PovertyAlleviation #CommunityEmpowerment #BullionsBlaze #AfricaRising #MiningInnovation

Effective mining policies can indeed strike a balance among citizens, the environment, and the energy transition. Achieving this balance requires a comprehensive approach that considers economic, social, and environmental factors while promoting ethical and sustainable practices in the mining industry.
I was honored to be on the #MiningIndaba2024 panel focusing on the need for a triple win for Africa's minerals where I highlighted how Uganda's mining policies focus on community development, state participation, and National Content in order to benefit citizens.

Empowering Women and Eliminating Gender-Based Violence in Nigeria's Mining Sector: A Collaborative Journey - By Janet Adeyemi On behalf of Women in Mining Nigeria , I extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to each of you. Today’s gathering marks a pivotal step in our ongoing mission to create a safer, more inclusive, and equitable mining sector in Nigeria. At Women in Mining Nigeria, our commitment goes beyond economic empowerment—we strive to foster community engagement, enhance capacity building, and nurture strategic partnerships that uplift women and children in artisanal mining communities. Today, we celebrate the remarkable progress made in addressing one of the most pressing issues in our sector: Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). With the support of the Ford Foundation, our "Catalyzing Change" initiative has been a beacon of hope, transforming communities in Nasarawa State by driving policy reforms, empowering women economically, and raising awareness about SGBV. As we reflect on the strides we’ve made, we also recognize the challenges ahead. Yet, we remain determined to continue building a future where women thrive in the mining sector, free from violence and discrimination. Together, we can shape a more equitable mining industry for all. #SGBVNasarawa2024 #WIMNIGSGBV2024 #WIM_FORDFOUNDATIONSGBVNasarawa2024

🌍 Mining for Good in Africa: Going Beyond Reducing Negative Impacts to driving overwhelming positive change🌍 I think that Mining companies operating across Africa have a responsibility that goes beyond simply minimizing harm in the communities where they operate. True impact means not only addressing the environmental and social costs of mining but actively working to uplift and benefit the communities affected by mining activities. Mining companies should aim to create ⛳️overwhelming positive change⛳️ —investing in education, healthcare, sustainable infrastructure, and local economic opportunities and collaborating with community members, particularly women and youth to drive multigenerational prosperity for lasting legacy of good. #MiningForGood #CommunityImpact #WomenInMining #SustainableMining #SocialResponsibility Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) Richflood Minerals Richflood Ltd (Environmental and Social Standards) #Sustainability #WomenMiners #ClimateChange #Mindset #Productivity #ESG #Leadership #Management #Career #SDG #Entrepreneurship #Innovation #Motivation #Technology #Marketing Image: James Oatway for OER https://lnkd.in/dnApG3Z9

Program Management Expert with focus on youth empowerment, natural resource governance, disaster management, humanitarian response, climate change, community governance systems and policy work.
This week i had an eccentric engagement with communities from different mining communities we are working in, just listening to them sharing their stories and the lack of hope for mineral value addition and beneficiation in country made me wonder if ever our resources are a blessing or a curse. Their stories detailed the heavy handedness of the employment conditions and the paltry salaries people working there are getting, including the lack of community power in all the legal instruments that are there to protect and promote responsible mining. The environment remains exposed to destruction without checks and balances as the voice of the powerful politicians always supersede the community power whenever conversations are instituted. Corruption and misinformation of the processes are more evident in resource extraction as we push for engagement platforms between mine actors and communities often times the issue of political muscle is felt at all stages thus delaying the harmonization of the legal instruments that protect communities from forced evictions, environmental, social, cultural and governance practices. Key players should commit to working together to influence responsible mining in Zimbabwe if by any chance we anticipate getting tangible results from our resources.

I see Africa's significant gold reserves as a catalyst for economic growth and development. However, it's crucial to address challenges in mining deeper deposits, improve resource governance, and ensure that extractive industries benefit local communities. South Africa, Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania's substantial reserves present opportunities for: 1. Economic diversification 2. Infrastructure development 3. Job creation 4. Poverty reduction To fully leverage this potential, African governments should: 1. Implement transparent and accountable mining regulations 2. Invest in mining infrastructure and technology 3. Promote local content and value addition 4. Ensure environmental sustainability Unlocking Africa's mineral wealth can drive transformational growth, but responsible management is key. #AfricaGoldReserves #MiningInAfrica #AfricaRising #SustainableMining #EconomicTransformation

Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) commends the African Development Bank’s initiative in #BurkinaFaso to build civil society and private sector capacity for promoting #GenderEquality and reducing emissions from #deforestation. There is an urgent need for more #stakeholders across Africa to take similar actions, especially in #mining #communities and targeting these regions with #gender-inclusive, #sustainable practices that can greatly enhance local resilience to climate change while promoting equitable #economic #development. This commendable #initiative can create transformative solutions that address both environmental and socio-economic challenges in #Africa’s diverse mining landscapes. https://lnkd.in/dSTFyGxf
