📈 Gold Prices Reach Record Highs: A Significant Milestone for Africa’s Mining Sector 📈 Gold has hit historic highs, reflecting both global economic shifts and the increasing demand for this precious metal. This surge offers immense opportunities and challenges for African mining communities and economies. Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) recognizes the critical role of women miners and stakeholders across the gold supply chain. Now, more than ever, it’s essential to foster sustainable practices, ensure fair returns for artisanal and small-scale miners, and prioritize gender equality in this evolving landscape. Here are some key statistics 1. Gold prices reached a record high of over $2,000 per ounce in recent weeks, driven by economic uncertainties and strong demand from investors. 2. Africa produces approximately 20% of the world’s gold, with leading producers including Ghana, South Africa, and Sudan. 3. Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM): ASM contributes to roughly 20-30% of Africa’s total gold production, employing millions across the continent, with women making up about 30-50% of the ASM workforce in some regions. 4. Economic Impact: The gold mining sector contributes around $32 billion annually to African economies, with the potential for even greater impacts if fair trade and sustainable practices are strengthened. 5. The mining sector could significantly reduce environmental impacts, with the potential to cut emissions by up to 50% in mining operations by 2030 as Sustainable Mining Potential abounds. https://lnkd.in/dDSJ3gmr #Gold #MiningAfrica #WomenInMining #SustainableMining #EconomicOpportunity #WiMAfrica https://lnkd.in/d_eaA4CT

Renewable energy technologies like wind turbines and batteries are essential for a just transition and require huge volumes of critical minerals and metals to make them. When it comes to critical minerals, the ends – important as they are – do not justify any and all means. Producing them responsibly requires mining with principles. “While visiting Budi County in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria State, we were deeply concerned to learn that our women and school-aged children are leaving their communities to work at gold mining sites. For these women and girls, small quantities of gold are a primary means of survival, but the costs to their #education and future opportunities are high. There is an urgent need for targeted interventions to bring these children back to school and to support these women with alternative economic #empowerment #initiatives. By investing in sustainable livelihood options, we can help reshape futures in Budi County” Mrs Editha Meling Leju Keiny, Executive Director, National Women Empowerment and Rehabilitation Organization (NWERO), South Sudan Implementing Partner for Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) At WiM-Africa, our commitment to grassroots work with NWERO in #SouthSudan is integral to driving meaningful change. By engaging directly with local communities, like in Budi County, we can deeply understand the unique challenges they face and respond with practical, #sustainable solutions. Budi County is unique. Our work in Budi is not just about addressing immediate needs—but about creating pathways to brighter futures for individuals and the community alike. As Africa advances its mining sector, the effective #IMPLEMENTATION of existing regional frameworks is essential to drive sustainable and equitable development. By putting these frameworks into #ACTION, we can ensure that Africa’s mineral resources are managed responsibly. These key words emphasized #ACTION & #IMPLEMENTATION The African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) has established key implementation instruments that align with the principles of the #AfricanMiningVision (AMV) and support inclusive #growth, #environmental #stewardship, and community empowerment.
