This is inaccurate: "The streaming platform seems to be struggling with all the Super Bowl traffic." The technical issue is not due to the "volume" of traffic Paramount was receiving. I see the highest number of issues reported around 5:30pm ET, with fewer reports coming in at 6pm, but users are still reporting "video is currently unavailable" errors as of 7:00pm ET. Some are reporting that the stream is back up but at a lower quality (720). I was getting 5.1 on Fire TV, but I am no longer. I was getting HDR on Roku. Audiences today have a plethora of television content to choose from, both on traditional TV networks as well as digital platforms and streaming services. With so many options, viewership is fractured, split across an increasing number of shows. As Michael Schneider of Variety writes, “As basic cable gets zombified, the double-digit declines continue. Live sports, of course, is saving the broadcast networks and some cable networks still in that game. And then there’s the interesting case of the diginets, which have managed to keep their declines small as they program a wider range of nostalgia fare to aging adults. And the networks with a very loyal, specialized audience — bravo, Bravo — experienced the smallest declines this year.” The top TV networks of 2023 may surprise you. Despite rank, some networks faced larger viewership losses than their peers. NBC, for example, despite ranking # 1, experienced a 12% decline in audience. YoutubeTV recently announced that they have 8 million subscribers, which makes them the 4th largest pay TV provider. YoutubeTV is also has the most subscriptions among virtual MVPD providers, higher than Hulu, Sling TV and Fubo. Acquiring National Football League (NFL) Sunday Ticket rights from DIRECTV helped propel YouTube TV's growth. While Comcast/Xfinity and Charter Communications are still the largest pay TV providers (tied at 14.1 million subscribers), cable TV companies continue to lose subscribers while YouTube TV and other vMVPDs continue to grow.
