-Advanced Functional integrated Lightweight Roof Structure for Urban Trams - Hörmann Vehicle Engineering is collaborating with RCS GmbH Rail Components and Systems, Arno Hentschel, and the Fraunhofer Kunststoffzentrum Oberlausitz FKO to develop lightweight fiberglass composite roof structure for urban trams. The system idea is based on a high level of functional integration of the roof structure, air ducts and HVAC interface structures. The goal is to reduce the weight of conventional roofs by up to 40% while reduction of parts due to functional integration, simplifying assembly and production and minimizing costs. To achieve this, the team is leveraging advanced simulation tools and testing methods to optimize the roof structure's performance in terms of stiffness, strength, and fatigue resistance under various loading scenarios. 🌍 Did you know the construction sector is responsible for around 40% of global CO2 emissions, with concrete production being a major contributor? The Institut für Textilmaschinen und Textile Hochleistungswerkstofftechnik (ITM), TU Dresden and Institut für Massivbau (IMB), TU Dresden won a Techtextil Innovation Award for a revolutionary new process. 🏆 Their method uses carbon fibre to manufacture precast concrete elements, significantly reducing concrete usage. The key innovation: hollow core slabs that have cavities and require 28% less concrete than conventional, solid steel beams - with the same load-bearing capacity.
