Is there a link between generosity and good business? Coming from someone in #impactinvesting, you might think that is a loaded question and I'm trying to fool you into investing into dressed up charities. No! Humans are drawn to generosity and it compels us to reciprocate... but only if it is genuine. Whether you live in a world of abundance or scarcity depends on your view towards generosity. My good friend (Sam Barbee) sent me this video of his community's response of generosity to those in need. (https://lnkd.in/gywxNhgB) It starts out showing NewGround coffee. A great choice of coffee but an even better choice of business as they train and employ ex-offenders. NewGround is doing great as a business but the founders Joel Grates and Dickon Morris believe in generosity. They pour it out generously and they also receive it. From Resurgo and Impact Central who helped them start the business and individuals including Sarah Bowles, Jamie Broderick, Charles Eve, Richard Atterbury, Vincent Camerlynck, Patrick Butcher, Alex Edmans, Nahim Afzal, Alastair Colin-Jones and many others who were generous with time and resources to help their business off the ground. Selfridges showed generosity, giving them the prime Corner Shop location when they were just starting and over the last 4 years the business has grown to more than £1m in annual revenue. Want to try their coffee? Head into Jamie Oliver's new restaurant on Catherine Street where they specially selected it for their customers. Generosity is definitely good for business ... and all the other parts of life that actually really matter.

This week is Loneliness Awareness Week and Darlington Hippodrome has launched Matinee Matters, a series of hosted, informal meet-ups at the theatre supported by Care Matters. These pre-show sessions will play an active role in helping tackle loneliness and self-isolation amongst people in the local community. Matinee Matters will enable like-minded people to chat, laugh, make new friends and share thoughts on a matinee performance at Darlington Hippodrome. Matinee matters sessions are free to attend and take place an hour before selected matinee performances at Darlington Hippodrome. The free session can be easily added to any ticket booking online, over the phone or in person at the Box office. Food insecurity is a growing concern across Pinellas County. We are honored to work with Daystar Life Center, Inc. through our #projecttryton initiative. According to Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap 2020 study, which used data from 2018: Pinellas County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.2% (124,430 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.1% (38,080 children) Hillsborough County: - Food insecurity rate: 12.6% (178,820 people) - Child food insecurity rate: 19.5% (61,600 children) It's important to note that these numbers are from before the COVID-19 pandemic, which likely exacerbated food insecurity in these counties and across the United States. Feeding America projected that the overall food insecurity rate for the United States could have reached up to 15.6% in 2020 due to the economic impact of the pandemic. #endhunger

I came across the news today that NSW Government is launching a parliamentary inquiry into the impacts of loneliness (Ref: https://lnkd.in/eErqnbDq), it struck a deeply personal chord with me. This isn’t just a policy issue—it’s something I’ve lived through in the most challenging way During the pandemic, I made a personal decision not to get vaccinated. It was a choice that led to many people (including life long friends and family) turning their backs on me, and I found myself more alone than I’d ever been in my life. The loneliness was overwhelming. My hair even started falling out from the stress and isolation. It was a time when I felt completely ostracised, like I didn’t belong anywhere. That experience taught me just how much we all need one another. We’re wired to be connected, to be part of a tribe. When that’s taken away—when we’re isolated or cast out—it can feel like a piece of us is missing. But it also showed me the power of community, even when it feels out of reach. OneAnother was created at the beginning of the pandemic, as I wanted to build a space where people could reconnect, no matter what their circumstances. We started hosting community connection events, and promoting frequent acts of kindness to bring people from all walks of life together. It wasn't just about socialising, or volunteering — our community is about finding a sense of purpose, rediscovering our values, and practicing self-compassion. They’re about making sure no one ever has to feel as alone as I did. I believe that by investing in our own purpose and values, and by being kind to ourselves and others, we can start to rebuild that sense of community. It’s not just about having people around—it’s about truly connecting with them on a deeper level. When we do that, we can become a collective again, a society where everyone feels they belong. The government’s inquiry is a hopeful sign that we’re starting to take loneliness seriously. But real change starts with each of us, by reaching out, showing up, and being there for one another. Because at the end of the day, we all need someone to lean on.
