Studies continue to show us that cancer patients benefit from more targeted, desired care, especially when it comes to the subject of palliative care. Stepped care — where patients begin with fewer visits that only escalate when their needs change — had a positive impact on quality of life for the lung cancer patients shown here, who were subjected to fewer unwanted visits while receiving the right care at the right time. Palliative cancer care can be challenging to coordinate, requiring close communication with patients throughout the process. More flexible treatment plans that accommodate their comfort and needs help patients and health systems. Palliative care + cancer care. People often think of palliative care in the latter stages of a cancer diagnosis or treatment journey. Studies are proving benefits to patients when palliative care is involved earlier in their process. Patients who are relatively healthy at the time of diagnosis might not need as many regular visits from a palliative care specialist as patients whose disease has progressed. In a stepped-care model, the level of care matches the needs of the patient and meets them where they are. The lesson: it's never too early for palliative care! #palliativecare #cancercare #cancer #healthcare #holisticcare
Studies confirm the benefits of EARLY palliative care for patients undergoing standard cancer treatment. Palliative care is care that is intended to improve the quality of life of patients who have a serious or life-threatening illness. Most experts define this type of care, which includes managing symptoms, establishing goals of care, and providing psychosocial support, as beginning at diagnosis and continuing throughout a patient’s experience with cancer. “A diagnosis of cancer is never easy for patients, so it is promising that we now have a strategy of early palliative care that can help patients cope while improving their quality of life,” commented Andrew S. Epstein, M.D., of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, “Findings such as these continue to expand and build on the benefits of integrating palliative care into the cancer care continuum.” #cancer #cancercare #palliativecare #palliativemedicine #healthcare https://lnkd.in/e-jZg4g6
