Extraordinary urbanists 4: A closer look at Mary Rosemond of Baltimore. To Rosemond a city is the people who live there. As a schoolteacher she developed inventive ways to deepen and empower this sense of community connection in residents, including children – and to deploy it to protect and strengthen the community. Too often, urbanists neglect this vital aspect of urbanism in favor of designs, structures, and amenities. These are essential but insufficient. Urbanists today need Mary Rosemond's example and message.

This is why ideas from Strong Towns, Revitalize, or Die., and Main Street America are so important. It’s also why facade grants and rehabilitated downtown buildings are so critical to the life of a city.

The article is from a few months ago and goes hand in hand with the downtown tracker. The article walks through the new projects and development plans that are changing our city. Concerned about urban sprawl? We are too. But the North American approach to suburbia isn't the only way — The Netherlands has a different take on new suburb construction. Dutch suburbs are urban enough to have amenities like stores and really good transit infrastructure, but open enough to provide more greenspace and parks (especially for families with small kids). The secret includes mixing detached homes, townhouses, and low-rise housing in every neighbourhood — not relegating multi-unit construction to specific areas of suburbs like North Americans do.
