Chronic pain and movement solutions specialist. No need for never ending maintenance sessions and daily rehab exercises again
Into the deep end. My competing days had a big influence on the work I do today and my clients' results. To get good, you tracked down the hardest tournaments available. Unlike today, there were fewer tournaments and with a lot of them, the numbers and depth in talent, skills and ability was immense. Wasn’t uncommon to have at least half the field having national squad member status and international title as a bonus. You could not pick and choose events because there weren't that many and you had to be good to just break into the top 5. This was one of the hardest events to mind. One that I placed and haven’t managed to win. CIMAC WAKO World Cup event. Mix of styles, grades, men and women together (this was in the forms/ kata division). Top spot was Hungarian national team member, multiple European and World Champion. Second place was a Spanish national team member with, I think, a few international titles to his name as well. Me rounding off the top 3. With tougher events, you end up seeing familiar faces over time and knew that each person was bringing their A game that day. Eventually becoming used to the higher standards and stress levels. Being able to maintain a calm mind is key, especially when clients have seen multiple therapists and a few of these are well respected names in the sector and have not gotten improvements. Or multiple major accidents and falls to sift through. Or they have a deadline that they must be back to full health by. One client did mention that he thought I was ‘too cool’ in my response when they briefed me about their case. When a surgeon told them that nothing else could be done and they had to live with the issue now. The above is one of the reasons. Have you ever noticed that a bronze medalist is usually happier than a silver medalist at the end of a competition? As we're seeing in the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics, this trend is quite apparent. This isn't just a coincidence; numerous studies have shown it to be true by analyzing the reactions of silver and bronze medalists. Logically, you might think a silver medalist would be happier than a bronze medalist. But the human mind doesn’t follow simple math. This happens because of something called counterfactual thinking. A silver medalist often thinks, "If only I had done a bit better, I could have won gold." Meanwhile, a bronze medalist thinks, "At least I made it onto the podium!" Winning a silver medal often comes after losing the gold, but winning a bronze medal comes after securing a place with a victory. This phenomenon reflects our own lives. We often overlook what we have and feel disappointed by what we lack. Let’s appreciate our blessings, which are far more numerous than our problems if we start counting. Life is full of choices. Always count your blessings to stay positive and motivated.

Yay! I finished third! If you happened to catch the men's 100-meter butterfly competition in the Olympics, you would know that two Canadians got on the podium with silver and bronze medals. I couldn't help but notice how much happier the bronze medalist, Ilya Karhun, appeared to be compared to the silver medalist, Josh Liendo, after they saw the results. In fact, the commentators made a comment (as commentators are prone to doing) about Karhun's self-congratulations and how happy he looked at the end of the race. This pattern repeats itself time and time again. A 1995 study by three psychologists and a study by the University of Iowa in 2021 both found that bronze medalists do indeed tend to be happier than silver medalists, which, on the surface, doesn't seem to make any sense. The reason - and this affects our happiness and outlook in every aspect of our lives - has to do with something known as "counterfactual thinking," the phenomenon of comparing our achievements to what might have been. So, the theory goes, silver medalists focus (at least initially) on what they lost. Silver medalists lose out on a goal medal (in Liendo's case, by a mere 0.9 seconds), whereas the bronze medalists are thinking, "Phew, I made it onto the podium!" One is focused on what they lost. The other is focused on what they gained. So, what lens are you looking at your achievements and results through? Intentionally reminding ourselves to focus on and celebrate our wins rather than churning over what could have been is a powerful way to stay more motivated and happier in all aspects of our lives.
