PSYC 482: Client Screening, Assessment, and Placement is part of the University of Idaho Addictions Minor. PSYC 482: Client Screening, Assessment, and Placement is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of substance abuse screening, assessment and placement of addiction's and dual disorder (co-occurring disorder) clients. This overview includes information related to the diagnosis of substance abuse; information related to particular testing instruments (including the reliability and validity of some instruments); issues and problems that may occur within the testing environment; and issues that may influence the outcome of particular screening and assessment instruments. Finally, the course discusses the differences between screening and assessment tools/instruments, how to determine the severity of substance use/abuse, and placement of clients within particular treatment modalities. Youth with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are overrepresented in the justice system. To address this phenomenon, Rutgers Juvenile Justice & Youth Development Certificate Program is offering Adolescent Substance Use, a course that provides vital foundational knowledge of youth substance use with the goal of improving service delivery and quality of care in criminal justice settings. Led by Instructor Tameka Chatman, LCADC, SAP, the course engages in insightful discussions about various critical topics, such as addiction, risk factors, consequences, DSM-5 criteria, intervention strategies, and the neurobiology of addiction. Students will also gain knowledge on important drug classes, current trends, emerging drugs of abuse, and the correlation between substance use and mental health disorders. Stigma is a silent predator in the battle against substance use disorder. It lurks in the shadows of misconceptions, feeding on silence and misunderstanding. Our latest blog post, "Breaking the Chains of Stigma to Substance Use Disorder for a Healthier Society," aims to shine a light on this pervasive issue. I recall a time when a close friend struggled silently with substance use, fearing judgment more than the addiction itself. It was this stigma that delayed his journey towards recovery. But when he finally found a supportive community, his path to healing truly began. This personal experience is a reminder of how understanding and empathy can break the chains of stigma, opening doors to effective treatment and societal acceptance. I've recently begun to look a little deeper at Erik Erikson's psychosocial stages. Taking into consideration just how many individuals diagnosed with substance use disorder began using in their adolescent years (12-18), Erikson's stage associated with that age group's basic conflict is 'Identity vs. Role Confusion'. DING DING DING! 💡 🔔 While adolescents are experimenting with their identities within their family dynamics, their friend groups, their social interactions at schools and in organizations, adolescents are vulnerable. Our world is difficult and they're learning where they fit. Not only that, but they're tasked with making life altering decisions (ex: attend college vs. don't attend college). My point? The 28 year old who's in-and-out of treatment for substance use, is likely lost in more ways than they present. The obvious is the difficulties of their life now, what's not so obvious is that they still feel they are trapped in their 15 year old self wrestling with the idea of 'Who am I?' because it was a crucial stage they may have detoured all together! I know it was true for me. Half my friends went on to be successful as young adults by society standards by starting careers and families, but the other half of my friends like myself fell deeply into addiction. Unfortunately, some of us never made it out. Purpose: This assignment affords students the opportunity to critically analyze how persons with substance use disorders or other behavioral addictions are portrayed in film and literature and begin to conceptualize, analyze, and present the case with evidence-based literature. This will be a valuable skill in a staffing setting and to diagnose and formalize a direction for client treatment.

Too often students kicking addiction relapse when schools lack proper aftercare: • Cookie-cutter counseling fails to address unique risks • Untrained staff miss signs of lingering trauma   • Peers and mentors who could reinforce recovery are disconnected But with the right support, these students can truly turn their lives around.  👉 Tailored aftercare plans based on treatment history 👉 Counselors trained in motivational interviewing and relapse prevention 👉 Peer recovery groups and mentors to promote accountability By investing in counselor expertise on the front lines, we can give students the compass they need to navigate to graduation and beyond.  The alternative — mismanaged care unraveling progress — is too heartbreaking to accept.  The choice is clear: Will we set them up for success or failure? #drugprevention #addictionrecovery #socialemotionallearning
