What we learned this week: 𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: Streaming is finally taking the reigns from linear TV. Whether or not this new foundation can support the weight of Disney’s vast IP portfolio remains to be seen. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: Uber’s first quarter results provide some interesting insights into the state of the US consumer. 𝗧𝗶𝗸𝗧𝗼𝗸 𝘃𝘀. 𝗨𝗦 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: TikTok filed suit against the US Government and its attempt to ban the app. The company is claiming a violation of First Amendment rights. Do you ever sit down to watch one show on Netflix, only to find yourself still in front of the screen hours later? (Robbie raises hand 🤚) It's by design. We all know that Netflix has done a great job at getting people to try streaming. The whole world streams now--and most people have had access to Netflix at some point. Awareness is no longer the big challenge. It's about retention. And the leading metric for retention is engagement. Subscribers who are consuming content are way less likely to cancel than subscribers who are inactive. Seems obvious. But many organizations that say 'retention' is their highest priority don't understand engagement at all. Disney is increasingly prioritizing 'hours per subscriber' as a means of both reducing churn and increasing ad revenue. It seems to be working. Newly released Nielsen data indicates that viewers are binging more than ever, at least as a percentage of total TV time (40.3% for June). It's about time. And it's a good reminder for any organization that's trying to figure out how to improve retention, which is everyone! #streamingwars #litrendingtopics Jake Perez

MARKET SHARE DYK: The Walt Disney Company topped (month of) May’s Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge, a cross-platform view of total TV consumption introduced last month: Disney’s share of TV viewing was 11.4%, followed by YouTube (9.7%), NBCUniversal (9%), Paramount (8.8%), Warner Bros. Discovery (8.1%), and Netflix (7.6%). Fox saw the largest month-over-month increase, rising from 6.1% 6.4%. OTHER: 39% --------> IFTNETWORKTV is in the OTHER category! Which means we have MARKET SHARE! A thin slice, but a SLICE!! Now we grow that slice!!! PS: (We like "CAKE 🎂 charts". Sorry pie 🥧 charts!)

From Q3 2021 to Q1 2024, Netflix's total catalog has seen a steady increase in TV shows while the number of movies has remained relatively flat. This shift has led to a declining movie supply share within the platform's overall catalog. This trend is also evident in the demand data: TV shows consistently hold a higher demand share compared to movies, with TV demand surpassing movie demand in every quarter from Q1 2022 to Q1 2024. With Parrot Analytics' Content Panorama, you can explore how your competitors’ catalogs are evolving over time to identify whitespace opportunities and guide content investments.: Assess single or multiple platform catalogs’ size and composition, understand the TV show vs. movie share, genre distribution, and catalog age over time. Refine your analysis by availability market, platform type, and more. Find out more here: https://hubs.ly/Q02BxpCf0

As it did during its dispute with Charter, Disney is offering a $30 discount off of Hulu + Live TV, good until September 11, with the price increasing on 10/17 to $82.99 monthly. Clearly an act by Disney to try and get some customers from DirecTV during the licensing dispute. Here's an even better idea... END THE DISPUTE! - https://lnkd.in/e3S29tUR - #disney #hulu #directv #streamingmedia #cordcutting

Netflix has consistently proven it can revive the fortunes of older shows, with 'Suits' being the classic example of the Netflix 'accelerator effect' making the 2011-19 NBCUniversal series a latter-day massive hit when released on Netflix in 2023. This accelerator dynamic is also clear in the UK market when original broadcaster shows like 'Friday Night Dinner' get a huge 2nd window release bump from Netflix exposure. Data from Digital i & Barb Audiences shows viewing minutes for the comedy on Channel 4's own streaming service were multiplied by a factor of 15x on Netflix, showing how the latter's superior user experience can amplify audience demand. Produced by ITV Studios subsidiary Big Talk, the Channel 4 series ended in 2021. The Netflix accelerator effect was even more striking for the Channel 4 drama 'Deadwater Fell', which increased viewing minutes by a multiple of 50x when released on Netflix over the same period. #netflix #streaming #audience #research
