  Update Flyovers of Landfills Find Hotspots of Methane Leakage U.S. landfills likely emit more methane than models of their emissions suggest, new research finds. In a new study using aircraft-mounted sensors to detect methane emissions, researchers discovered that 52% of the landfills studied were releasing large plumes of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Biochar from rubber seed shell was produced using two reactors. The in-house reactor yielded higher carbon content and surface area, while the commercial reactor provided greater thermal stability. 🔬 Exciting News! Our Latest Research is Published! 📄 I'm thrilled to share that our new research paper, “Influence of Intake Charge Temperature and EGR Rate on the Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Ammonia/Diesel Dual-Fuel Engine,” has been published in the SAE Technical Paper series (Paper No. 2024-37-0025). This study, conducted in collaboration with esteemed colleagues Marziyeh Hoseinpour (Ferdowsi University of Mashhad), Mohammad Mahdi Salahi, Amin Mahmoudzadeh Andwari (University of Oulu), Ayat Gharehghani (Iran University of Science & Technology), and Antonio Garcia (Universitat Politecnica de Valencia), explores innovative strategies to integrate ammonia into conventional diesel engines, focusing on the role of intake charge temperature and EGR rate in optimizing combustion and reducing emissions. Key findings include: CO2 Reduction: Up to 30% under specific conditions (390K, 40% NH3, and EGR20). NO2 Reduction: Approximately 65% compared to diesel under the conditions of (360K, 20% NH3, and EGR20). NH3 Reduction: Peaks at higher temperatures with a 50% decrease observed. CO2 to Methane

The Ohio Department of Development awarded more than $1 million in grants to several University of Cincinnati CEAS researchers to examine better ways to capture carbon dioxide and other pollutants from industrial emissions. LOCAL 12, WKRC-TV highlighted Professors Joo-Youp Lee, Vadim Guliants, Panagiotis (Peter) Smirniotis, and Junhang Dong and the numerous projects they are working on to reconcile coal and climate change. Projects include solvents to minimize water and energy use to remove greenhouse gases, turning carbon dioxide from a liability into a resource by developing technologies to capture and utilize it, creating novel and cost-effective ways to produce ethylene from coal, and more. Researchers at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and Columbia University have found a way to convert carbon dioxide gas into carbon nanofibers, thereby locking away the greenhouse gas for many years. The method uses electrochemical and thermochemical reactions that can be performed at normal pressure and relatively low temperatures. Reducing CO2 emissions is a top priority for countries as they attempt to keep global temperatures from rising. The movement away from fossil fuels has been planned. Still, it is far from reality for heavy industries, aviation, and shipping sectors. In such a scenario, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies are being developed to prevent the release of CO2 gas into the atmosphere. Stored CO2 risks leaking into the atmosphere, while products made from captured CO2 might be used immediately, releasing the gas. Nanofibers are threads of molecules with a carbon backbone measuring billions of meters. In addition to delivering strength to a compound like cement, the carbon fibers can also conduct electricity and heat. OCCYER for DRM Reaction¹ Today I learned from Pak Muhaimin Iqbal that OCCYER can also be configured for Dry Reforming of Methane (DRM) reaction other than the reactions mentioned in the sketch he made below. Methane dry reforming is a chemical process that involves the reaction between methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) resulting in a mixture of synthesis gas or syngas (carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2)). This reaction as a whole can occur as shown below: CH4+ CO2 --> 2CO + 2H2 As we know, the Martian atmosphere is about 96% carbon dioxide, presenting a plentiful reactant for dry reforming. And CO2 capture technologies must be energy-efficient, given the limited resources of a Martian colony. The captured CO2 can be used by OCCYER for this DRM reaction. In the post "OCCYER for Sabatier Reaction" application of ISRU (in-situ resource utilization) in Mars colonization, the Sabatier reaction provides a way to produce methane. The CH4 produced from Sabatier reaction or Methane from the decomposition of biological waste from Mars colony residents such as feces and other organic waste can be used for this DRM reaction. The produced syngas from DRM reaction could fuel a Fischer-Tropsch reactor to create longer hydrocarbons, or be used to generate electricity directly. And the hydrogen produced can be utilized as rocket fuel, a chemical reductant, or stored for energy. The implementation of OCCYER for DRM reaction on a Mars colony must be designed in a highly efficient and self-sustaining manner, taking into account resource limitations and difficult conditions. Challenges such as stabilizing operational temperatures can be overcome with good thermal insulation and waste heat utilization. The use of OCCYER materials must also be adapted to withstand harsh Martian conditions including extreme temperature fluctuations and potential mechanical erosion from Martian dust. Overall, with the right design and technology, OCCYER for DRM reaction could be an important component in the Mars ISRU strategy, supporting human life and operations on the Martian surface. This represents a synergistic solution, converting the waste and atmospheric CO2 into valuable resources, potentially driving sustainability and technological progress in the colony. 1. Danish ammonia technology should be funded substantially to further accelerate this development. We have a strength position within shipping (A.P. Moller - Maersk, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping), ship engine technology (MAN Energy Solutions), renewable energy technologies (Vestas, Siemens Gamesa), electrolysis technologies (Nel Hydrogen, Green Hydrogen Systems, Dynelectro, Topsoe), ammonia catalysts and ammonia plant engineering (Topsoe), flexible and dynamic power-to-ammonia plants (Skovgaard Energy), renewable infrastructure capital partners (Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners), digitalization, control and optimization technologies for power-to-ammonia plants (2-control ApS), and the best technical university in the European Union (DTU - Technical University of Denmark) with a focus on providing the technology and educated work-force to realize ammonia as a green fuel, as well as a number of technology service institutes supporting a number of aspect related to safety etc (FORCE Technology, Danish Technological Institute). The journey has been started by MissionGreenFuels funded by Innovation Fund Denmark but should be further accelerated by significant focused funding.

If we can establish effective supply chain management for ammonia and hydrogen, these fuels could power every drive in the world, contributing to a greener Earth.

Our recent paper, "Optimization study of an amine loaded fly ash based stable aerogel for enhanced CO2 capture" has been published in the Polymer Journal (Elsevier, Q1). The article describes the optimization study that aims to enhance the aerogel's PEI loading and thermal stability to capture CO2. Introducing fly ash enhanced the PEI loading up to 4.5 g/g and thermal stability below 190 ◦C of the PEI-impregnated polymer aerogel. In addition, the improved hybrid aerogel impregnated with PEI exhibited a CO2 adsorption capacity up to 4.83 mmol/g at 30 ◦C. Remarkably, this aerogel maintained 98.3 % of its original capacity without any substantial loss after undergoing five regeneration cycles. The proposed optimization contributes to the development of sustainable and efficient materials for mitigating atmospheric CO2 levels, and addressing critical environmental challenges.
