🌟 First day as an Uber STAR Software Engineering Intern ✨ Yesterday marked the beginning of an exciting ride at Uber, and what a day it was!  From exploring the office to meeting fellow interns, it’s been an incredible start. There's been a lot to take in, but I'm really looking forward to what's coming next! Some time back, I came across the #beRealInternChallenge and loved the concept. So here’s my (very late…) take on it: 🌟 What were my first-day highlights?  Exploring the office, which feels like a little town inside a building, connecting with an amazing group of fellow interns, soaking in the Uber vibe, and meeting my mentor and team were definitely the highlights. 🌟 What am I excited about doing/learning in my internship? Becoming a real SWE! I can't wait to tackle projects on Uber's scale, understand how large teams collaborate, and see how the theoretical knowledge from uni applies in the real world. Plus, with Uber's diverse teams doing fascinating work, I'm excited to learn more about what everyone is up to! 🌟 What are my personal goals for this internship? My main goals are to learn how to effectively contribute to big projects and make meaningful connections with inspiring people along the way. The steps to asking thoughtful questions at your software engineer internship 1️⃣ Take some time to think about the question. What is the issue you're having? Have you encountered similar ones in the past, and if so, how are they similar? Start thinking about what they have in common, and from there, try to understand what you don't already know. 2️⃣ Spend some time trying to solve the problem. Documentation, digging through the codebase, Stack Overflow, Slack channels, you name it. Those are just a handful of resources you have at your disposal. If you're dealing with a bug in your code, well, you know debugging is your best friend if not using print statements. 3️⃣ Be strategic about asking your question. At this point, you've pretty spent a good 45 minutes if not an hour or two trying to solve the problem, but you still haven't achieved your desired result. You don't know if you're going down a rabbit hole, overthinking the problem, having a slight misunderstanding of the problem, etc. So, it may be wise at this stage to start asking questions. BUT Before you ask for help, make sure you can answer the following questions: ✅ What is your problem, and why is it important to solve? ✅ What steps have you currently taken, and what have currently learned from the process of solving that issue? Ideally, you want to make the questions as narrow as possible so that it's easy for people to understand your question and help you.

Good Software Engineer: I know enough to build a product that will solve a problem well for an end user.

With just a month left before starting my Software Engineering & Machine Learning internship, I'd like to take a minute to share some of the crucial things that I did to secure this opportunity. Big tech layoffs have saturated the market with qualified applicants, making internships and full-time positions harder to get. Here are some ideas for helping yourself to stand out: 1) Portfolio: I developed a personal portfolio that includes my personal and academic interests. This gives employers a sense of who you are and why they should seek you. Be confident in your brand. 🗃️ 2) Leetcode: Leetcode is undeniably a rite of passage for CS students. But don't be convinced that you need to exhaustively practice until you dream in Big O. Instead, study and be confident in your ability to break down problems and think through your solutions. 🧑💻 3) Read: With new tools and models coming out daily, it's important to stay current in the things that interest you. CS is as much about culture as it is about technical skills. LinkedIn is a great place to hear about breakthroughs and interesting papers. 📄 4) Involvement: If you're in school, getting involved with any kind of CS club or ACM chapter is crucial. This is a great way to make friends and to ensure you're in the know when opportunities come around. (Post coming!) 🏛️ 5) Be Critical: Constantly evaluate your skillset in reference to your peers on a local and global scale -- most of us have this down. Pair a critical mind with an encouraging spirit, and, as the saying goes, focus on being better than you were yesterday. My favorite analogy: 1.0^365 = 1 1.01^365 = 37.7 💪🏼 6) Perseverance: After receiving 5-10 internship rejection emails per week throughout last spring semester, I was ecstatic to finally land an interview, and consequently an internship at Parsons Corporation. Never give up the search for your people. 🚀 I would like to once again thank Justin Hoatland, Justin P, and Mariah Kushin for making this such a fun and exciting process.
