On the eastern side of Bridgeport, Connecticut, majority-minority communities and those living on low incomes face challenges like scorching summer temperatures, high electricity bills, and a severe lack of tree coverage. With only a 5% tree canopy cover, residents are particularly vulnerable to damaging storms and health issues like asthma. ✅️ Groundwork Bridgeport is collaborating with residents to tackle these social, economic, and health challenges through strategic tree planting. Programs like the Tree Patrol, for example, engage youth and instill a sense of responsibility and a connection to the environment. Through community-led tree-planting efforts, they seek to address health and climate challenges at its core to foster lasting transformation and resilience. Groundwork Bridgeport's approach showcases the power of community-led initiatives in transforming urban spaces and fostering a healthy, green, just, and resilient future. A car free suburb of Phoenix, is on average 15 degrees cooler than the rest of the city. In Grand Rapids last summer, there was nearly an 18 degree temperature difference between the most and least shaded streets. Imagine if we had entire street corridors here in Michigan that were entirely, or mostly car free. What if we event began to remove a few square feet of turf grass at a time in front yards for pollinators, native and native adapted flowers? How much more livable, connected, and engaged could we make our towns and cities?

Our legislation, House Bill 1358, establishes an innovative state-city partnership for the support and management of Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, Baltimore’s largest park. With its mature forest, diverse wildlife, scenic trails and historic structures covering more than 1,000 acres, Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park is one of the largest urban forest parks on the East Coast. It should be the envy of other Mid-Atlantic cities. Instead, the park has an unsavory reputation, and most city residents avoid it. It’s well past time for Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park to fulfill its potential as the pride of West Baltimore and a true regional destination. Baltimore has many fine parks, but GFLP is unique.
