As we predicted, official Kremlin accounts covered snap elections in France in a mostly neutral tone. The accounts saved their criticism of the electoral process until after most ballots were cast on 7 July and it became clear that the left-wing bloc would secure a surprise victory—a blow for Moscow. But inauthentic accounts kicked into high gear. We detected more than 14,000 posts from pro-Kremlin, likely inauthentic accounts on X about elections in France between 10 June–6 July. In keeping with the narratives we observed during the EU elections, most of these posts supported the French far right or undermined French President Emmanuel Macron. The accounts likely miscalculated by not also seeking to undermine the left-wing bloc. Last month's European Union Parliamentary elections were conducted fairly and peacefully, but they were not wholly immune from a wave of election-related disinformation. GDI observed narratives that aimed to undermine democratic processes, spread hostile conspiracy theories about key institutions and individuals, and benefit foreign actors like Russia by weakening support for the bloc. These narratives continue to pose a threat to democracy even after the polls have closed. In order to safeguard future elections, policymakers should take note of lessons learned in the aftermath of this latest round. GDI's new report details the kinds of disinformation narratives and tactics most successful in these elections, as well as an analysis of current and proposed policy measures to fight election disinformation. Is there hope for Belarus? Our latest issue is out! Read more in 'Elections without Choice' on our website: https://lnkd.in/d9PKaZyK This year marks the largest number of elections held worldwide in a single year, with over 60 countries holding elections throughout 2024. While the vast majority of these elections will be democratic, some, particularly in our region, may not be so free and fair. In March, for example, Vladimir Putin will undoubtedly remain in office following the “elections” in Russia. This is also the case for Belarus, which will be holding its first elections since the fraudulent 2020 presidential election which led to massive protests and the regime crackdown. Even though the outcome of these upcoming parliamentary elections will surprise no one – and thus our title for this issue as “elections without choice” – it does provide a context for us to discuss Belarus in depth. Our authors in this issue describe the trends currently unfolding in the country and the society and help us understand the growing divisions between those inside Belarus and the tens of thousands now living in exile. This includes the pro-democratic forces who are largely based in Vilnius and Warsaw and are continuing to prepare for an eventual change. Yet how that change will look or when it will come, no one is certain. Obviously one of the largest factors related to Belarus’s future is the outcome of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Indeed, the ongoing war in Ukraine, now entering its third year, further underscores the importance of the upcoming elections worldwide. With the situation on the frontlines becoming even more tenuous the politics of western countries and elections this year will have significant consequences for Ukraine and the wider geopolitics of the region. Related to that is the ten-year anniversary of Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity which unfolded on the Maidan Square in Kyiv in 2014. The revolution brought huge positive change to the country, but also set off a series events – including Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. Infosecurity.sk uncovers #disinformation trends from #Slovakia: ➡️The second round of the presidential election was determined by voters mobilized by fear and uncertainty. The narratives of warmongering or serving the West, which were used in the anti-campaign to attack Ivan Korčok, gained not only intensity but also effectiveness in the days before the election. ➡️The approaching European elections open up space for further exploitation by disinformation actors. Paradoxically, these are mainly politicians who will be running for a seat in the European Parliament again this year. ➡️The Slovak information space is increasingly dominated by narratives that pit the European Union and Russia directly against each other. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Ahead of the U.S. elections, adversaries are weaponizing social media to gain political sway. Russian and Iranian efforts have become increasingly aggressive and transparent. However, China appears to have taken a more carefully calculated and nuanced approach. China’s seeming disinformation efforts have little to do with positioning one political candidate as preferable to another. Rather, the country’s maneuvers may aim to undermine trust in voting systems, elections and America, in general; amplifying criticism and sowing discord. Spamouflage In recent months, the Chinese disinformation network, known as Spamouflage, has pursued “advanced deceptive behavior.” It has ...
