This pretreatment structure captured, and retained, an impressive 9 cubic yards of pollutants in it’s first year of operation! This level of performance information is easy and inexpensive to gather, in this case simply measured and noted by the City crew during maintenance. In our industry, I would like to see more simple and inexpensive documentation like this for verification of BMP performance when feasible. Specifiers and owners should have confidence that what goes in the ground will do its job. I have found that it is all too common for the latest trending stormwater treatment bmp to be used en masse only to find it doesn’t work as hoped years, or even decades, later. I also see many lean too heavily on laboratory testing. Lab test protocols serve their purpose, but it is impossible to mimic mother nature! We have a lot of good research coming out of MN, and have learned this lesson with ponds, HDS units, sand filters, and even the particle size distributions we use for design. What do you see in your area?

If there is one thing our #engineers 👷♀️ 🏗 at Ground and Water Limited are #expert in, it is working on #brownfield #sites 🏭 for #redevelopment and knowing how to analyse all the #risks thoroughly. With most #building #projects 🏢 , the biggest unknowns❓ and therefore #risks are getting out of the #ground #safely, #sustainably and #economically. February 15, 2024: Tomorrow is National Wisconsin Day! This day recognizes the 30th state to join the U.S. Some interesting facts about ‘The Badger State’ include: · The state symbol, the badger, does not refer to the animal. Rather, it refers to the lead miners of the 1820s who travelled for work and even dug tunnels to find somewhere to sleep and stay warm—in the same way as a badger. · The largest woolly mammal to have ever been excavated was discovered in Kenosha. · Wisconsin is the #1 exporter of cranberries, sweet corn, and ginseng and the #1 producer of cheese in the U.S. · William Harley and the Davidson brothers (Walter and Arthur) built their first motorcycle in Milwaukee. · The first hydroelectric plant in the world was built at Fox River in Appleton in 1882. The Marquette Interchange is a major freeway interchange located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where I-94, I-794, and I-43 meet. These highways are the cornerstone of the southwestern Wisconsin freeway system and link about one-third of the state’s freeway traffic to the rest of the country. Originally built in the 1960s, the interchange underwent a total reconstruction between 2004 and 2008. The project involved 46 cranes and more than 4,000 workers in what was the largest construction project in state history at the time. FIGG Bridge Inspection, Inc. (FBI) provided construction engineering and inspection services for this project. Wisconsin Department of Transportation #civilengineering #concrete #bridge #wisconsin

September 17th: Construction Contract Signed for Galveston Seawall On September 17, 1902, the construction contract for the Galveston Seawall was signed by J. M. O’Rourke and George Steinmetz. This contract marked the official start of the seawall’s construction, which was a crucial step in protecting Galveston from future hurricanes. The initial segment of the seawall was completed on July 29, 1904. This concrete structure was 3.3 miles long, 16 feet wide at its base, and 17 feet high. It proved its worth during subsequent hurricanes, significantly reducing the loss of life and property damage. The Galveston Seawall is a remarkable piece of engineering history! #ThisDayInTexasHistory #TexasHistory #OnThisDay #TexasHeritage #TexasPride #HistoryOfTexas #TexasEvents #HistoricalTexas #TexasEducation #KnowYourHistory #TodayInHistory #TexasPast #HistoricTexas #LearnTexas #TexasTimeline #TexanHeritage #SouthwesternHistory #FamousTexans #TexasMemories #thedaughtreylawfirm #realestatelaw #mineral rights #probate #estateplanning #houstontexas #htown #learningmoment

February 1, 2024: Today is National Texas Day! This day recognizes the 28th state to join the U.S. Some interesting facts about ‘The Lone Star State’ include: · The highest speed limit in the country is observed on a stretch of Texas State Highway 130 between San Antonio and Austin. Here it is allowed to drive up to 85 miles per hour. · The deadliest natural disaster in United States history occurred in Galveston. The Great Galveston Storm of 1900 killed approximately 8,000 people. · The famous phrase “Don’t mess with Texas” was coined by an advertising agency that was responsible for helping the state with its anti-litter campaign. In the 1980s Texas spent $20 million a year cleaning up trash along its highways. · Texas has more species of birds than any other state, which includes screech owls and hummingbirds. The Eastern Extension (Section 32) of the President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT) connects the PGBT toll road to Interstate 30. FIGG designed the one-mile bridge crossing over Dallas's Lake Ray Hubbard for Texas Department of Transportation as part of this overall project. The superstructure consists of precast prestressed U-shaped beams 54” in depth with an 8” cast-in-place concrete slab on top. The typical deck width is 70', and the span lengths vary from 104’ to 115’. The substructure consists of rectangular reinforced concrete bent caps on top of circular reinforced concrete columns and drilled shafts. #civilengineering #concrete #bridge #texas

Forester - District Ranger at US Forest Service - Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest; Planning Section Chief, Southern Area Complex Incident Blue Team
Big trees + blue paint = pending timber sale. A century of fire suppression in the Southern Appalachians, along with some well-intentioned reforestation in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, has resulted in an overabundance of Pinus strobus (Eastern white pine) on sites that should be anything but. A group of us were in the field today, discussing how to engage state and private partnerships to cut the white pines, kill most of the non mast-producing hardwood sprouts, do site prep burns, and plant shortleaf pine, which should steer this area back within the natural range of historic variation - less an elk here, mountain lion and woods bison there, of course.

One thing about side dump trailers that gets people thinking they should switch is the versatility of it. From big rocks, a bunch of little rocks, sand, gravel, water, sludge, etc. — if you can get it in that tub, then you can haul and dump it safely, no matter what it is. There’s always something we’ve never heard before that our customers want to haul. With a side dump, you can haul anything. For the more unique situations or products, we design trailers for the customer’s application. This short video shows how Holtrop Excavating takes advantage of their SmithCo: https://lnkd.in/gjXwXXTp
