Last week at Redstone Residential's Leadership Summit we had the opportunity to listen to Mike Eruzione, former team captain of the 1980 American Olympic Hockey Team. One of my favorite quotes from Mike's speech was, "It's really easy to be nice. It's really hard to be an a**hole." I believe this statement rings true throughout all industries, especially real estate. We have the chance to change lives in real estate, as the product or service we provide involves one of our residents' essential needs: a home. Much too often we see landlords, asset managers, and property managers that are obsessed with the bottom line. Their focus is completely narrowed to the needs and wants of their investors. This focus can sometimes cause the owners and operators of communities to push the needs of their residents to the side. I believe this focus can be flipped, and doing so will benefit both sides of the equation. Treat your residents with respect. Find creative ways to help them when difficult situations arise in their lives. Maintain your community and create a beautiful home for those who live there. Doing so will drive resident retention, cause your residents to respect the community, and in turn increase your bottom line. In real estate, being nice will create a positive difference. Not doing so will probably create the opposite. #CRE #RealEstate #SocialImpact #Multifamily #StudentHousing
