What's the best way to extend a job offer? Q. Hi Liz, what is the best way to extend a job offer? A. Reach out to your first-choice candidate and let them know you are approaching the offer stage. Ask them, "If we were to make you a job offer, what would it need to look like in order for you to accept?" Capture everything they say and let them know you'll convey their requirements to the hiring manager - and let them know when you'll get back to them (soon! within 24 hours). The hiring manager may want to talk with the candidate, or may accept the candidate's terms. Either way, stay in close communication with the candidate until every detail is ironed out. Then, either you or the hiring manager (or the agency recruiter) can extend the offer verbally and let the candidate know that an offer letter will follow shortly. Never, ever send an offer letter to an unsuspecting candidate. That's not flattering; it's rude and unprofessional. How you communicate, how responsive you are and every detail of your correspondence and follow-through matter very much at this stage (and at every point in the recruiting process). What do you do if you are 'low ball' offered after an interview? 😱😭😱😭😱😭😱😭😱😭 The interview went well. You like the firm. It's a great opportunity to progress and develop. One issue, the offer is much lower than you expected. Is this the end of the road? No way! Here's what you should do. ❤ Express appreciation for the offer and explain why the job is attractive to you. 👀 Provide evidence of your qualifications and accomplishments and any other factors that might justify a higher salary. ⚖️ Be open to negotiation and compromise, and be willing to discuss alternative solutions such as additional benefits or flexible working hours. 🤝 Always remain professional and courteous. Really great advice from Liz Ryan One other option is when you reach out to the candidate to say something along the lines of "We love you as a candidate. You are our top pick, and we were thinking about extending an offer to you at X pay plus Y bonus etc. etc. If we did that, how would that meet your expectations?" By testing the waters out verbally, you are giving the candidate more freedom to share more honestly and openly (as opposed to the typical fear that can be caused if a candidate receives a written low-ball offer. I.E. - I received an offer. If I ask for more, they might pull the offer entirely. Should I just keep quiet and make it work?). Why not intentionally open the door to have a mutually beneficial conversation with the candidate where the candidate has the opportunity to say "I love the role, the company, and this opportunity; however, I was really hoping to at least hit X in base pay". Okay. Now you can have a conversation about what options exist and what is and is not possible which could give you better odds of having a motivated engaged new hire versus a secretly disgruntled fearful new hire. #joboffer #negotiating #careeradvice
