📢 LINEMAN APPRECIATION DAY 04/18/2024 Linemen (and women) work on power or phone lines — keeping the current flowing to our homes and businesses. The lineman profession began in the 1840s with the introduction of the telegraph. Lines were installed on trees, and eventually poles, to allow for long-distance communication. There are approximately 120,376 linemen in the US today.  It’s a dangerous job. After 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, the 113th Congress passed a bill designating April 18 as National Lineman Appreciation Day. All linemen wear personal protective equipment that includes rubber gloves, rubber sleeves, arc rated face shields, flame-resistant clothing. These workers work behind the scenes so we can keep our lives moving. They work tirelessly often during odd hours away from their families to address electrical problems ranging from minor storms to devastating weather events like tornados, hurricanes, wild fires, etc.. Celebrate and honor the hard working men and women who often work in challenging conditions to keep the lights on. We proudly recognize all electric linemen for the services they perform around the clock in dangerous conditions to keep power flowing and protect the public’s safety. “The Kiss of Life” is the famous photo captured in 1967 of a lineman giving an unconscious lineman mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while in a harness on a pole after coming in contact with a 4,160V line. (2) workers rushed to their fellow line worker (1) attempted to climb the pole but fell. We recently celebrated National First Responders Day, but we should always extend our gratitude to first responders who run towards danger to keep us safe. Police, firefighters, and medical teams are often first at the scene, but there is another group of unsung heroes—lineworkers. Specifically, I want to spotlight the teams who practice a technique known as "barehanding"; their high-risk, high-skill job ensures that we all have the power we need daily. As we honor those who make our world safer, let's also tip our hats to those who keep it running. The oil and gas industry continues to dodge accountability by saying: That's not us, it's our contractor. They should have fair labor standards for all contractors that includes, at the very least, clean restrooms where drivers can wash their hands. Drivers should be paid for all hours worked, including time spent onsite waiting for a load or waiting to unload. CEOs who do not require fair labor standards for contractors should be forced to poop in a bucket. A loophole in federal law allows drivers to spend hours to days waiting with no sleep or pay.
