This road sign caught my eye at South Beach (the dog beach part) Fremantle, Western Australia yesterday in the context of the 40+degree days (and mid 30s night temperatures until the early morning) we are currently experiencing. What I was first drawn to was just how tough it is in extreme weather to be homeless and reliant on your car for accommodation because its actually really dangerous to be in a car in hot temperature overnight never mind during the day. Add to that is that on hot nights people are out and about and its dangerous from a personal safety point of view. (Nothing better than colder nights when its raining as that keeps the 'hoons' away - who appear to be afraid of rain - and you feel a lot safer.) Of course all these points are exacerbated for those who are sleeping rough without cars. But then of course you get to the basic point which is why councils (including progressive councils like City of Fremantle) are doing this and not putting up signs saying if you need safe shelter talk with us. We can help. They are doing it because ultimately, of course, the ratepayers win out and councils buckle up and defer to their constituency. (Maybe the constituency should take a detour after their morning swim and espresso and get back to their Fremantle roots and do something about this.) Or maybe its main roads who put up the signs. I dont know - either way its either local or state governments that are responsible for this ugly demonstration of inhumanity (and maybe those elements of thr constituency who stand idly by.)

Thank you NWT for coordinating this letter. It was crass and ill advised of the highest order for those politicians to attack a person just doing their job, one which ministers and MP’s are fully aware of but like most in this government choose to ignore when they want to, 3 of these MP’s are standing down at the next election! This issue is just backing local politicians who ignore facts, procedures, people, and common sense, doesn’t make it right. A road through an internationally important habitat, a chalk river and a nationally important bat population isn’t listening especially when there are alternative routes ok a mile west and over sterile farmland but they are alternatives. A road that cost £100 million per mile, just think about that for a second!! It’s not economically viable, you could build Bernard Matthews a factory, a new ambulance station and new ambulances for NNorfolk and still have change!! These MP’s haven’t read the latest reports out this week reposted by me and others that people want fast clean public transport not more roads, they want choice to use good timely fast public transport when they can and cars when they can’t, they want to reduce cars on the roads so public transport works faster because people have got the fact climate change is happening, but I suppose that’s not convenient for the MP’s or for businesses that didn’t move with the times and now find where they are non profitable in a global economy and lack of European markets. This road across this space is not needed, viable or cost effective and there are alternative routes including upgrading the existing Lenwade to Hockingham road. Ok rant over Those MP’s should know better and should stop victimising people doing their job.

What the ... is going on here (I'm assuming that this is the same across the country). It seems like everyone has their hand out at the moment. Orana Park The Arts Centre The Dux De Lux Christ Church Cathedral The A & P Show I'm not sure if its a coincidence, or the fact that the CCC are asking for submissions on the LTP (where should they spend ratepayer money). I'm not suggesting that any of these organisations / facilities are not worth supporting...but (without unreasonably putting the cost back to the Christchurch Ratepayer) there is only so much money to go around. I would suggest that (on a list of priorities) that there are a few things that are higher up the list. The Country, and most businesses are being forced to cut expenditure, tighten their belts and live within their means. It might be time for some of these other organisations to think about doing the same.

These guidelines do extend some the understanding of what reasonably practicable positive duties are for land and waterway owners, tourism operators or program providers when it comes to public safety in, on and around inland waterways. If you are a dam authority, water corporation, park authority, local government authority, marine authority, tourism operator, program provider or providing lifeguarding services at inland waterways, these guidelines may apply to you and come into effect 1 July 2025. There are some positive duties to conduct a risk management process, put into place a drowning prevention plan, consider signage and rescue equipment (if applicable), ensure supervisors are suitably qualified, consider the infrastructure, consider the program safety plan. In addition to the positive duties elements, there’s a stack of great information about hazards and ways of mitigating them across a number of factors: natural, built, biological, animal, behavioural, social, activities, flooding, etc.

How is the situation with fireworks in your community? Does your municipality organize official shows or has opted not to for diverse reasons (protection of wildlife, sensitivity to war refugees, sensitivity to domestic animals, environmental damage etc)? Are consumer fireworks permitted or banned in your community? If banned, is the ban enforced (and how)? I have heard so many stories since I just started posting on this topic a few days ago. People who have lost homes due to fireworks. The flood of people injured by fireworks in hospitals- loss of body parts, eye injuries. Emergency services in the city attacked by people throwing fireworks at them. And of course all the untold stories of wildlife disoriented, traumatized and sometimes killed due to the senseless revelry of fireworks. I myself rang in New Years in a peaceful fireworks-free environment. Some of the videos I saw of the so-called revelry in diverse cities looked terrifying. Thank you to everyone who has taken time to share info with me. It is disturbing to learn that the situation is worsening year by year in many places, but some hope is provided to learn that many cities are leading the way with complete bans (and strict enforcement). I'm looking to connect with municipal leaders in cities that have enforced bans or are seeking to do so as well as advocates for bans.
